ISLAND COUNTY MARINE
RESOURCES COMMITTEE (MRC)
Making Camano Island’s shoreline as healthy as it can be for salmon, shellfish, orcas and other marine life is the mission of Island County Marine Resources Committee (MRC). Formed in 1999, the MRC brings together citizen volunteers of diverse backgrounds to study near shore conditions, advise county leaders and inform the public. Members include scientists, farmers, business people, educators, boaters, anglers and others with a stake in county waters such as the US Navy. Representing Camano Island on the 12-member board is Hi Bronson of Utsalady, a land-use planner and retired US Navy helicopter pilot. Bronson is also a Washington State University (WSU) Beach Watcher.
The MRC works closely with the Island County Salmon Recovery program and other county committees and departments concerned about water quality and shoreline health. It partnered with WSU Beach Watchers of Camano Island to launch Shore Stewards, a stewardship education program for shoreline property owners that is now spreading throughout Puget Sound.
