(L to R) Fire Commissioner Steve Lich; Allyson Brooks, Washington state historic preservation officer; Jim Turk, of Camano Island; Levon Yengoyan, Camano Island Fire and Rescue assistant fire chief; and Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen tour the old Camano City schoolhouse, located on Orchid Road last Tuesday morning. Turk, who is spearheading an effort to preserve the old building, said he hopes the state will see the value of saving the one-room schoolhouse. While no formal preservation plans have been announced, Brooks suggested Turk and supporters attempt to have the school added to the National Registry of Historic Places. Built as the Camano City School in 1905, the traditional white schoolhouse overlooks Saratoga Passage on the western edge of Camano Island. It is one of the oldest schoolhouses still standing on the island. "It's a wonderful opportunity for us to preserve history," said Haugen.
