On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, she will share the dramatic story of this near-fatal event for those attending the women’s health luncheon at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. The Stanwood Democrats will meet Sat, Feb. 11, 10 a.m., with a social gathering at 9 a.m. for breakfast at the Viking Restaurant. Re-organization and officer elections for 2012 will be held. There will be state caucus discussions including proposed resolutions to support amending the constitution over the Citizens United case (e.g. movetoamend.org). And to remember Carol Ronken, the sparkplug of the Stanwood Democrats.

Mark calendars to solarize

March 7, Solarize Stanwood Camano will hold a public workshop on how to participate to get the special local group discount in spring 2012, 6:30 p.m. at Camano Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, free. April 10, another workshop will be held at the same time in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, 27201 99 Ave. NW, Stanwood. Come to either workshop and learn how to go solar now with solar panels. Marriage seminar

Feb. 10 and 11, “Marriage on the rock” simulcast by Jimmy and Karen Evans will be shown at Bryant Community Church east of Stanwood. Friday’s seminar will take place live at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, but will be live stream via the internet, 7-9:30 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. –noon at Bryant Church, 26830 53rd Ave NE, across from the Bryant Store at the intersection of SR532/SR 9. Valentine bingo

The Silvana Fair Board invites you to bring your sweetheart to a Valentine bingo event Sun, Feb. 12 at Viking Hall in Silvana, 6 p.m. There is a cost and the snack bar opens at 5 p.m.

Shoe drive

“Laced with love” shoe drive at Z’s Body and Soul is in its fourth year of collecting used shoes for those around the world who need them. Shoes: sturdy, closed toes, gently worn or new (please no sandals, flip flops or heels). Many shoes will go to the The Arc of Whatcom County and St. Vincent De Paul. Shea at St. Cecilia

St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Stanwood hosts special guest, the acclaimed Catholic author and award-winning columnist Mark Shea, Sat, Feb. 18, for two talks, the first is 10:30 a.m., followed by a potluck luncheon, then the second talk at 2:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share for the luncheon. Discussions will be held on “Reading the Bible as the first Christians did,” and the “Family as icon of the Holy Trinity.” Free-will offering taken, call 629-4425 for more information.

New members to be welcomed

A wine and cheese reception, hosted by the Stanwood/ Camano Branch of AAUW, is being held for potential new members Thurs, Feb. 9, 7 p.m. at Merrill Gardens. Local author Penny Buse will be the speaker. The local branch of AAUW is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and welcomes all those interested in the organization. Nominations

Kohl’s Department Stores will be accepting nominations for outstanding young volunteers for the 2012 Kohl’s Cares® Scholarship Program, until March 15. Nominations for kids ages six to 18 will be accepted at kohlskids.com. Nominators must be 21 years or older. Through the program, Kohl’s will award more than 2,200 young volunteers more than $440,000 in scholarships and prizes honoring kids who have made a positive impact on their communities. Two nominees from each of the more than 1,100 Kohl’s stores nationwide will win a $50 Kohl’s gift card. More than 200 of the store winners will win regional scholarships worth $1,000 toward post-secondary education. Ten national winners will be awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships for post-secondary education and Kohl’s will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf.

Dinner dance

Stanwood Chamber of Commerce and the Stanwood Area Historical Society are hosting a “Big Band” dance dinner, sponsored by Whidbey Island Bank, featuring The Moonlight Swing Orchestra Sat, March 10, 6-10 p.m. at the Floyd. Buffet dinner served between 6 and 7 p.m. includes spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, dessert and coffee. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. There is a cost per person or per couple.

Library events

The Stanwood Library will offer a computer class on e-mail basics at 6:30 p.m. Tues, Feb. 7 for people who want to learn to set up email accounts. Pre-registration required. Ready Readers: Preschool Storytime will be at 9:30 or 10:30 a.m. Wed, Feb. 8 for 3-5 year olds with books, sing-along songs and creative activities. Caregiver required. The Stanwood Book Group will meet at 6 p.m. Wed, Feb. 8, to discuss Tracy Kidder’s nonfiction book “Mountains Beyond Mountains” at Merrill Gardens, 7212 265 St. NW, Stanwood.

Ready Readers: Baby & Me Storytime, 9:30 a.m., Feb. 9, for newborns to 18 months, songs, rhymes and activities. Caregiver required. Family Storytime, 10:30 a.m. Feb. 9 for the entire family with storytimes funded by the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library. Fantasy Gamers, a role-playing gaming program for teens, is 3:30 p.m. Fri, Feb. 10.

Librarians as information guides: Sno-Isle Travel and Language Databases at 1:30 p.m., to demonstrate use of the library’s online databases to find maps, make travel plans or learn a foreign language. Pre-registration is required for this event, which is funded by The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation and Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation. Film festival

Faith vs. Fate Films presents its Festival of Shorts, featuring the work of eight directors who created short films over the past three months, 1-3 p.m. Sat, Feb. 18 at the AMC Pacific Place Theater, 600 Pine St. in Seattle.

Fiddlers to jam

The Old Time Fiddlers meets Fridays Feb. 10 and 24, March 9 and 23, at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave NE, Arlington. Celtic jam is at 5 p.m., workshop at 6, circle jam at 7. Coffee, tea, juice, and snacks throughout the evening. Bring some snacks to share if you wish. Free family entertainment; listeners and acoustic musicians of all ages (and their instruments) welcome.

PFLAG meeting

The monthly PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) meeting will be in the public meeting room of the Stanwood Library, 7-9 p.m. Thurs. Feb. 16. Discussion will include the group’s plans for activities and programs in 2012 and the current effort towards marriage equality here in Washington State. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons and their parents, friends, families and allies are invited to engage in conversation and share their experience in an environment of safety and acceptance at a meeting of the Stanwood-Camano Island satellite of Skagit PFLAG. Celebrate electricity

All students in grades K-12 who live in Snohomish County and Camano Island are eligible to enter an art contest celebrating electricity for PUD of Snohomish County. Students are asked to design a poster that shows one of their favorite ways to use electricity. Artwork must be original and created by the student. It may be handdrawn in any media, computergenerated, or a photograph, or a combination. No stick-on letters, glitter, or stickers and no copyrighted images, photographs, and/or slogans. Artwork must be 8.5 by 11 inches, and only one per student. The deadline to enter is 5 p.m. Fri, March 16. Artwork will not be returned. Entries will be judged on creativity, content, clarity and originality. All decisions of the judges will be final, and winners will be notified by April 20. Download an entry form from the PUD website, and mail to Jenni Lamarca at Snohomish County PUD, PO Box 1107, Everett, WA 98206- 1107, or deliver to the PUD at 2320 California St. in Everett.

Essay deadline

Application essays for the 2012 Evergreen Republican Women’s Club scholarships are due March 1. The scholarships essay is based on the book, “The 5000 Year Leap,” by L. Cleon Skousen. For information, go to www.evergreenrepublicanwomen.com.

Cultural night

Stanwood Sons of Norway will have its dinner and cultural night Fri, Feb. 10. Social hour is 6 p.m., dinner served at 6:30, followed by the cultural presentation. Open to all members and anyone interested in the Scandinavian culture. The hall is located at 9910 270th NW, next to Wells Fargo Bank. Schrader to speak of epic voyage

Mark Schrader, who undertook an epic and historic journey of 25,000 nautical miles on a 64-foot sailing ship three years ago, will share his experiences from this remarkable voyage for the premiere of the 2012 Food for Thought Film & Lecture series at the Snow Goose Bookstore Sat., Feb. 11, 7 p.m. Copies of the book will be available for purchase after the lecture for signing by Schrader. Coffee, tea and goodies from the Open Gate Farm will also be available. The Food for Thought Film & Lecture series is sponsored by the Snow Goose Bookstore and the Open Gate Farm, and is a community outreach project of Slow Food Port Susan. There is no charge for the slide show and lecture, but seating is limited and reservations are requested. Call the bookstore, 629- 3631, for reservations. Chorale to sing

Sat, Feb. 11, Daughters of Norway, Ingeborg Lodge 43, will host the women’s chorale group from Everett singing Scandinavian songs at t the Sons of Norway Lodge, 9910 270th St. NW, Stanwood. Gather at 9:45 a.m. for coffee, then the program, followed by a President’s Tea. Guests are always welcome to join the monthly meetings and activities to learn about Scandinavian culture and heritage.

Writers League

Skagit Valley Writers League will host Janet Oakley, the Timeline Lady and author of “Tree Soldier” Thurs, Feb. 23, 6:30 -8:30 p.m. at the Mount Vernon Community Center, 1401 Cleveland St. She will speak on the creative process. Rag tag workshops

Adults and children over 6 can learn basic weaving techniques from Caroline Sumpter and create a simple doll, critter creature or a laptop computer case Feb. 9, at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, 18513 59 Ave. NE, 6-8 p.m. Use recycled items to build a loom and weaving tools, and use fabric scraps for weaving. Bring your favorite old shirt if desired. Parent participation required with 6-10 year-old kids, pay class fee when registering at 360-403-3448, plus supply fee to teacher at class. The workshop will be held again March 8.

Weavers exhibit

Skagit Valley Museum in LaConner will open “Over ‘n Under,” Feb. 11, 11 a.m., an exhibit featuring selections from the Skagit Valley Weavers Guild including baskets, rugs, table covers, clothing, etc. Exhibit runs through April 29. Scholarships

The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation announces there are more than 80 scholarships available this year to local students and families. Scholarships apply to people living within the boundaries of the Stanwood-Camano School District. Application deadline for the high school scholarships is March 9.
