Wrestlers win two of three to close out regular season

PHOTO BY JOHN GALBREATH | STANWOOD/CAMANO NEWS After a week of tough competition on the mat, in which the Spartan grapplers won two of their three regular season-ending matches, head coach Ray Mather was justifiably proud of his boys’ efforts.
“We closed out the regular season with a 13-4 overall record and we were third in the league (WesCo 4A North Division) standings,” Mather said. “I’m very proud of the boys and their hard work all season long. Their commitment to the program and their constant effort to improve showed on and off the mat this year.”
The Sparts conquered two opponents early in the week during a string of three matches in four days. Then, on Thursday, they lost to Snohomish, the WesCo 4A North’s second-place team behind Lake Stevens, 46-21.
District competition will take place at Monroe High School this coming Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3 and 4.
In their 44-32 conquest of Marysville-Pilchuck last Monday night, the following local wrestlers achieved victory: Nate McCaughan (106 pounds) pin, 18 seconds; Jacob Cole (113) pin, 1:15; Josh Langstaff (120) 10-2 major decision; Dalton Gilman (145) pin, 1:19; Kyle Bennett (160) pin, 1:36; Anthony Ortega (170) pin, 1:32; Garret Arrona (195) 11-3 major decision; and Michael Anderson (220) won by disqualification.
On Wednesday, the Sparts took care of the WesCo South’s Kamiak 44- 28. Earning wins over the Knights were McCaughan (106) by forfeit; Cole (113) by 9-6 decision; Langstaff (120) by 11-1 major decision; Nathaniel Zinkand (132) by pin, 1:26; Tanner Peterson (138) by 5-4 decision; Gilman (145) by 11-2 major decision; Zach Schut (152) by injury default; Bennett (160) by pin, 3:37; and Carlos Vilchis (220) by pin, 2:45.
Against Snohomish’s Panthers, McCaughan pinned his opponent in 3:34, Cole earned a similar pinfall in 2:51, Gilman put his adversary’s shoulders to the mat in 3 minutes, 44 seconds, and Schut secured a 7-3 win.
