Island County Commissioners Helen Price Johnson and Angie Homola will be featured speakers at the Feb. 8 meeting of the Camano Island Democrats. They will talk about their backgrounds, what brought them to politics, their motivations, and their vision for the future. “Local voters are interested in how they came to Island County, and what aspects of island living they are most passionate about preserving,” said a spokeswoman. Precinct caucus
The 2012 Republican Party precinct caucuses for Camano Island voters will be held at 10 a.m. Sat, March 3, at the Lost Lake Club House, 1469 Lake Drive on Camano Island. There is no fee for admission. Registered voters residing in one of the 18 precincts located on Camano Island will convene for a pooled caucus.
After consideration of resolutions and the Island County Republican Party platform, the pooled caucuses will adjourn to individual precinct caucuses for the election of delegates and alternates to the 2012 Island County Republican Party Convention (March 31 at Oak Harbor High School).
Any registered voter of the precinct in which the caucus is being conducted who is willing to state by signing registration forms that he/she considers him/herself to be a Republican and has not participated and will not participate in the 2012 caucus or convention system of any other party is eligible to participate in the caucus.

The Camano Island Fire Jets Auxiliary next meets Mon, Feb. 13, 10 a.m. at the Country Club Fire Station on Elger Bay Rd. New members are always welcome. Women’s event
All women are invited to Camano chapel every second and fourth Thursday of the month for a discussion of God’s view on issues such as failure, contentment and forgiveness. This unique gathering, 9:15- 11:15 a.m., includes a panel of women who will share their opinions and life experiences.

Cama class, concert

Take guided walk
Join Friends of Camano Island Parks members on a guided community walk at Four Springs Lake Preserve Sat, Feb. 4. Meet at 9:50 a.m. in the Four Springs parking lot on Lewis Lane, off Camano Hills Road on the west side of Camano Ridge Road. See the preserve with a walk on the perimeter trail including the wetland trail. The perimeter trail includes two 50-foot fairly steep hills, distance approximately two miles. A shorter, more level, option is available. The approximately two-hour hike takes place rain or shine. Wear appropriate clothes and sturdy shoes or boots. Trail booklets and maps will be available at the walk for a suggested donation. Organ concert

WRAC meeting
A WRAC (Water Resource Advisory Committee) meeting will be held at the Oak Harbor Public Works Facility, 1400 NE 16th Avenue, Oak Harbor, Thurs, Feb. 2, 3-5 p.m. The mission of the committee is to ensure that the water resources of Island County are managed and protected in such a way as to ensure sustainable use, while protecting habitat, environmental and human health. There are 12 members, four for each of the county’s distinct geographical areas - North Whidbey, Central/South Whidbey, and Camano Island - representing the four water resource interests of Groundwater, Stormwater, Watershed Management, and Salmon Recovery. A free public seminar series on the types of energy exploration that are happening for the county will be at Mukilteo City Hall, Mukilteo, entitled “First Wednesday,” Feb. 1, 7-8:30 p.m. Explore “alternative energy” with Dena Peel, Snohomish County PUD. Upcoming subjects will be the “cool” animals of the Salish Sea, and what the opening of the Brightwater Plant is doing in cleaning up Puget Sound. “Our Puget Sound, In Depth” features experts speaking on these topics, which are brought to the public by WSU Extension Beach Watchers.
Civil Service Commission seeks applicants
The Island County Board of Commissioners is seeking applicants to fill a vacancy on the Civil Service Commission. Members are appointed for 6-year terms and consists of three members plus a secretary/ chief examiner. Members must be U.S. citizens, and a resident of Island County for at least two years.
