Off-duty firefighter dies in crash

By JEREMIAH O’HAGAN Staff Reporter

Matthew Roodzant, 38, of Camano Island, died at Providence Medical Center’s Colby Campus on Wednesday night, after driving his 2003 Dodge pickup through a guardrail and impacting a tree.

Roodzant was a firefighter in Woodinville.

His passenger, a 35-year-old man also from Camano Island, was uninjured.

Roodzant was traveling west on Cross Island Road about 10:20 p.m. when he failed to stop at the T-intersection with N. West Camano Drive, at the bottom of the hill.

Roodzant crashed through the guardrail and into a tree. He was transported to Everett’s Providence Medical Center Colby Campus, where he later died. The truck was totaled.

Washington State Patrol reported that speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
Roodzant had served with Woodinville Fire and Rescue since 1998. He is survived by his wife, Johanna, and their three young children.
