Coordinated by United Way, 350 kids helped seniors countywide with assistance from Volunteers of America, YMCA and Brian Hoyer, of Stanwood’s Serve It Up. “We started with 50 kids and 32 seniors three years ago,” said J.J. Frank, of the Y. The volunteers were mostly from the SHS Key Club. Along with cleaning windows, they also assembled emergency kids and delivered them to residents of the senior housing.

Community members are invited to join students, faculty and staff to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and Black History Month Feb. 8 at Everett Community College. The event was rescheduled due to snow Jan. 18. Speaker Barry Scott will present a tribute to King’s life, followed by a question and answer session 12:30- 1:30 p.m. in Baker Hall, room 120. Scott will speak about the civil rights movement of the 1960s and perform portions of King’s most famous speeches. “This celebration will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and foster a sense of community, as we work in unity to keep the dream alive,” said Karena Hooks, director of EvCC’s Outreach, Diversity and Equity Center, promotes cultural awareness. Everett Community College is located at 2000 Tower St. in north Everett.

Driver program

The AARP Driver Safety Program is for older drivers 55 years and up. Upon completion of the 8-hour course, participants qualify for a state mandated discount on auto insurance. The Feb. 7 and 8 program will be at Skagit Valley Medical Center, Stanwood/Camano, 9631 269 Place NW, call 360-814-2424 to register. Ed Triedwasser will teach it again at Camano Center Feb. 24. Donations needed

Stanwood Elementary’s eighth annual PTA auction is shaping up to be a fun night for parents and supporters of the school, and donations are still being accepted. The Saturday “Welcome to the Jungle” dinner and auction is set for 5:30-9:30 p.m. March 10, in the school’s gymnasium. Donations can include gift baskets, products, services and gift certificates, cash and in-kind donations. Donors will receive credit for their tax-deductible donations. Davis Place needs adult volunteers

Seeking fun, energetic adults who enjoy working with teens to volunteer at Davis Place, an after school destination for middle and high school age youth, on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, 2-5:30 p.m., and scheduled classes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Brunch at Legion

The American Legion Sunday brunch offers Swedish pancakes and more will take place 8:30-11:30 a.m., Feb. 5.

Ducks Unlimited

The 19th annual Stanwood Ducks Unlimited dinner auction is set for Feb. 16 at Viking Hall in Silvana. Doors open at 5 p.m. for great food from the Farmhouse Inn, with a no-host bar, live and silent auctions, and various raffles. It’s a family affair open to all. Discount tickets available until Feb. 6 online at Ducks.org.

Support free clinic

For the second consecutive year, a pancake breakfast and silent auction will be held for Safe Harbor Free Clinic Sat, Feb. 25. Breakfast will be served 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in west Stanwood. Breakfast will consist of pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, coffee or tea. The silent auction bidding begins at 7 a.m., ending at noon. Auction items include jewelry, furniture, gift certificates for dinner and services, kitchen items, etc. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. Safe Harbor Free Clinic was founded in October of 2008 by community leaders and medical practitioners providing quality, free health care and referral service in a safe environment.

Open house Feb.15

Summit Academy will have an open house and information night Wed, Feb. 15, 6-7 p.m. Current students will discuss how project-based learning and a rigorous, college readiness curriculum combine to inspire them. Food drive

A day of caring and sharing, because people are hungry all year, will be Sat, Feb. 4, when employees of the Stanwood- Camano School District will be at the QFC in Stanwood from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., collecting non-perishable food and toiletries for the Stanwood- Camano Food Bank. Organ concert

A concert Sat, Feb. 4 at Camano Lutheran Church featuring a new Allen Protégé organ. There is no admission fee to the 7 p.m. event, followed by dessert buffet. Information, www.camanoletheranchurch.org.

Free tax preparation is available at the Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center Feb. 2 and 9 by appointment only, 629-5257.

Discuss funding

Camano Law Enforcement Support Foundation will meet Mon, Feb. 6, 7 p.m. at the Country Club Fire Station, 1326 South Elger Bay Road to discuss short and long term projects or items to purchase, and the foundation’s fundraisers for this year. Square dancing

The Stanwood Sashayers, a local square dance club, will be offering beginning square dance lessons starting Feb. 20, 7-9 p.m. at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center, 27108 102nd Ave. NW in west Stanwood. Lessons will be held every Monday evening, with the first evening beginning with a free 6 p.m. spaghetti dinner and lessons at 7 p.m. No experience necessary. First lesson is free.
