The Stanwood/Camano Branch of AAUW will feature local author, Penny Buse, as the speaker at a wine and cheese reception Thurs, Feb. 9, 7 p.m., at Merrill Gardens. The author of “Stuck in the Mud: The History of Warm Beach, Washington,” will speak on how she accomplished this 40-year project, and the challenges she overcame in the process. The community is invited to the reception to hear Penny, and to learn more about the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The local branch is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year and works to provide scholarships for local young women. Additionally, members contributed more than $600 to the local food banks this holiday season. The mission of AAUW is to advance equity for girls and women through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research, and is open to anyone holding an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. Mark calendars

The Silvana Fair Board auction will be March 10, at Viking Hall in Silvana. Auctioneers will be George Magnochi and Dave Fenton. Door prize at the end of the auction will be $250 in cash. Fair board members will be out collecting donations from local merchants. Volunteer help is always needed. If you have a new item that you would like to donate, call 360- 652-8682, or 360-652-6064.

At the library

Preschool story time includes singalong and creative activities for 3-5 year olds starting at 9:30 or 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Baby & Me story times for newborns to 18 months starts 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, followed by family story times at 10:30 a.m., all funded by the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library. A role-playing game program for teens, “Fantasy Gamers” starts 3:30 p.m. Fridays.

There will be class on using library eBooks for the Nook 2-3 p.m. Tues, Jan. 24. No registration is required.

Scholarships

The local chapter of the American Association of University Women is offering two or three scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $2,500. To be eligible, applicants must be residents of the Stanwood/Camano Island/Arlington area, or, they must be graduates of Stanwood, Lincoln Hill, Lakewood or Arlington high schools. Applicants must have completed at least two years of college by June 2012, and have verifiable plans to continue upperdivision or graduate work at an accredited four-year institution in the fall of 2012. Applications must be post-marked by May 20. Money that supports these scholarships has been raised by the annual AAUW Art Show. Members of AAUW consider their scholarship offerings critical to their mission to empower women. Motorcyclists meet

Morning Star Riders Chapter of Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) meets 6 p.m. Thurs, Jan. 26 at Denny’s, 100 E. College Way, Mount Vernon. Prime rib at the Legion

Prime rib dinner will be served starting 4:30 p.m. Fri, Jan. 27 (after getting postponed due to snow) at the Frank Hancock American Legion Post 92, 26921 88th Ave. NW, in downtown Stanwood. Along with a generous cut of prime rib, the menu includes baked potato with trimmings, veggies, salad bar and dessert. Cocktails are available.

Jazz and spaghetti

Jazz and spaghetti will be offered at Stanwood High School Mon, Jan. 30, 5:30 p.m., with the spaghetti feed hosted by Stanwood Band Boosters. The event is to raise funds to send the SHS Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band to the Vancouver Music Festival. Music starts at 7 p.m. with performances by Stanwood Middle School Stage Band, under the direction of Michelle Rockwood, the high school Jazz Band, under the direction of Doug Morasch, and the warm sounds of Camano Junction. Audition notice

Director of the Anacortes Community Theatre Melissa Bridges needs four men and five women for the comedy “Out of Sight, Out of Murder,” that will run April 6-28. Call for art, poets

The Arlington Arts Council is seeking photographs of eagles and nature art in all media for Art at the Eagle Festival, opening with an artist reception 5-8 p.m. Fri, Feb. 3 at Magnolia Hall, 225 E. Third St., one block up from City Hall. All art must be delivered 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fri, Feb. 3. There is an entry fee per piece, with maximum of five pieces allowed per artist. A $100 cash prize goes to the best eagle photograph and the people’s choice winner. Youth are welcome to participate in all categories. All works must be framed and ready to hang. Fogdog Gallery in Arlington is calling for poems about eagles and nature for the festival Feb. 4, presented by the city of Arlington and the Stillaguamish Tribe. Cash prizes will be awarded for both first and second place winners in adult and youth categories. Poems will be displayed at Fogdog gallery, 233 N. Olympic Ave. Winners will be invited to read their works at the next Fogdog poetry event Feb. 23, and will be considered by Quill and Parchment publication. Jan. 26 will feature John Burgess, who grew up in upstate New York, worked on a survey crew in Montana, taught English in Japan and since 1985, has lived in Seattle, where he works in corporate communications for a local insurance company. Fiddlers to jam

Free family entertainment is provided by the Old Time Fiddlers Fridays, Jan. 27, Feb. 10 and Feb. 24, at Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave. NE, Arlington. Celtic jam starts at 5 p.m., workshop at 6 and circle jam at 7 p.m. Coffee, tea, juice and snacks throughout the evening. Acoustic musicians of all ages are encouraged to bring instruments.
