Last month Stanwood High School swimmer Matt Roe swam the 1500-meter freestyle at the Senior Nationals in Irvine, Calif. – one of only 91 young men from across the United States to qualify to do so.
In the course of making the qualifying standard in May, Roe broke the Pacific Northwest Swimming Association record by 17 seconds. At Senior Nationals he dropped 30 seconds from his previous personal best time and as a result finished 60th.
The following week, at Junior Nationals, Matt bettered his personal best in the 400- and 800-meter freestyle events.
Again, both these times were the fastest swims by anyone in the Pacific Northwest Swimming Association for the 2010 long-course season.
Roe is already focusing his attention on the upcoming short course (25 yards) and high school seasons, the latter of which begins in November.
