Grand opening
Instructors at StudioWest, from left, Marcia Campbell, Astarte, Shelley Dorland, Lynne Ayers, Janelle Klett, and Justy Mayernik will be offering free classes at a grand opening Sept. 11 of StudioWest, a cooperative effort that is using an historical building in the west end of downtown Stanwood. Built as a church, the building has also been a speakeasy and union hall. The mission of the three partnering businesses is “Beyond fitness to true wellness.” The director of Movement Arts yoga and Pilates studio, Kara Keating first discovered the space last spring. “We loved the high ceilings, old fir floors, natural light and general ambiance.” The building owner, Jane Cassady wanted to see a yoga studio in the space, so she helped Keating find Camano Island Zumba team and a belly dance teacher, Astarte, to share the rent. The grand opening celebrations runs from 1-4 p.m. Sept. 11, with free half-hour sample classes, refreshments and door prizes. The free classes are yoga at 1 p.m., belly dance 1:30 p.m., Zumba toning 2 p.m., Pilates 2:30, Yin yoga 3 p.m., and Zumba at 3:30. Participants will have a chance to meet the instructors, see the space, and sign up for classes. StudioWest is located at 10101 271st St. NW.
