Intoxicated, uninsured, non-licensed drivers caught

• A deputy stopped a green 1992 Ford Explorer on Aug. 19, after observing it driving at night with only parking lights on, and weaving within its lane. The driver, a 29-year-old woman, said she didn’t realize her headlights weren’t on. She wasn’t able to produce proof of insurance, and displayed signs of possible intoxication. She agreed to field sobriety tests, which she passed. A check of her driver’s license showed it was suspended, and that she was ordered to have an ignition interlock device. She had none. The woman was cited in connection with driving with license suspended, no ignition interlock device, driving without headlights and no insurance.

• On Aug. 29, a deputy stopped a red 1992 Ford Expedition after he observed the vehicle crossing the fog line onto the grass shoulder, twice. The male driver said he had dropped something and was trying to pick it up. He was unable to provide a driver’s license or proof of insurance. He was cited in connection with no driver’s license and no insurance.

• A deputy following a gold 2004 Kia Amanti on Aug. 27, observed the vehicle making an abrupt, last-second turn off SR 532 onto North Camano Drive near Terry’s Corner. At the intersection of North Camano Drive and Sunrise, the vehicle made a left hand turn without signaling or stopping at the stop sign. The deputy stopped the vehicle. When the driver, a 53-year-old man, unrolled his window, the deputy observed that “the strong odor of intoxicants came pouring from his vehicle.” The only passenger was the man’s 52-year-old wife, who also appeared intoxicated. The man’s speech was slurred, and his eyes were bloodshot and watery. His speech was repetitive and was not making sense. The man “readily agreed” to field sobriety tests, which he performed poorly. The deputy found open containers of beer in the man’s car. The man’s wife was provided a courtesy ride home, and the man was transported to the precinct, where he was cited in connection with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with an open container of alcohol in the car and failure to signal. During his processing, the man displayed extreme mood swings.

• On Aug. 25, a 67-yearold woman reported that sometime between Aug. 17 and 24, someone broke the window in her Juniper Lane cabin and gained entry, leaving it in disarray. Nothing appeared to be missing.

• A 27-year-old man reported a burglary in progress behind Camano Plaza on the night of Aug. 23. The man said he had confronted the suspected burglar while out walking, and that the man had fled. He provided a description of the man. Deputies arrived with a K-9 unit and tracked the suspect across the golf course to a private residence. A man who matched the suspect’s description greeted the deputies. When they asked him about the incident, he said he had been walking his dog and had stopped to look for cigarettes behind the plaza, where he saw two teenagers taking beer. The man said the teenagers told him it was OK to take, because it was old stock and would be tossed anyway. The man said he understood why he was being arrested in connection with seconddegree burglary. He was transported to Island County Jail in Coupeville, where he was booked on the burglary charge.
