Energy conservation grant awarded to Stanwood-Camano School District
The Stanwood-Camano School District has been awarded $664,000 for energy conservation. Presented by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction’s (OSPI) the district will match the grant with local funds and utility incentives to fund a $1,501,709 project at Stanwood Middle School.
The project will update the heating and ventilation system, the domestic hot water supply, and lighting fixtures for the entire school.
These updates will result in guaranteed energy savings and they will significantly improve the learning environment. The existing 41-year-old boiler will be replaced with three new high-efficiency boilers.
The air distribution system will be improved so that classrooms will receive appropriate heat and fresh air ventilation.
The new heating and ventilation equipment will be controlled by a modern digital system that will monitor and maintain a comfortable learning environment.
The current antiquated domestic water heater will be replaced with new, highly efficient units. In addition, lighting fixtures throughout the school will be replaced with new, energy-efficient fixtures.
The district entered into a partnership with the Washington State General Administration Office and McKinstry Industries to prepare a model design/ build project.
McKinstry Industries guarantees that the cost of the project will not exceed $1,501,709.
The superintendent of the Stanwood-Camano School District, Jean Shumate said it was exciting to get news of the grant on the first day of school.
“We are thrilled that we will be able, through this project, to ensure a more comfortable environment for learning for our students and staff while reducing our energy costs at the same time.”
Work on the energy conservation project will begin this fall and will be conducted during non-school hours.
