An old time community barbecue has been planned for Labor Day, with fun, “good eating,” and family entertainment, Mon, Sept. 6., 1-5 p.m., Odd Fellows Park, 96 S. Camano Ridge Road. Menu includes ribs, pulled pork, corn, beans, slaw, fruit, dessert and beverages. Tickets are on sale at Snow Goose Bookstore in Stanwood, as well as Camano Island Coffee Roasters and Seagrass Gallery on the island. Children 5 and under are free. This event is sponsored by the Camano Island Democrats, but it is a community, not a political, event. For more information, call Betty, 387-7558. WRAC meets Sept. 2

A Water Resource Advisory Committee meeting is Thurs, Sept. 2, 3–5 p.m. in the Camano Island Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road. The public is invited to attend the monthly meeting of the WRAC, which is an Island County citizen advisory group that provides oversight to water resources, salmon recovery and marine resource programs on Whidbey and Camano islands. Classes offer Zumba, line dancing

Classes to benefit the Camano Country Club Fitness Center will be held Tues, Aug. 31, beginning with Zumba Gold at 5:30 p.m., followed at 6:15 with line dancing. Line dancing starts every four weeks at Camano Country Club, 1243 S. Beach Drive, Tuesdays, 6 p.m. Dates are Sept. 7, Oct. 5, Nov. 2. Beginner/Intermediate. All donations will be used to purchase equipment for the fitness center. Kathy Leone will lead classes, anyone interested in helping, call 425-205-0870.

Shambala community trading post

The Shambala community trading post, perma-cultural plants/ seed exchange project is Thurs, Sept. 9, 7 p.m., at 395E North Camano Drive. W estern Night dinner at Country Club

The annual Western Night dinner will take place at Camano Country Club Sat., Sept. 11. B.Y.O.B./snacks, 5:30 p.m. and dinner, 6:30 p.m. BBQ’d chicken, ribs and sausage, catered by Pork Butt Catering, Walter Grossjean, owner. Co-chairing couples are the Glen Jacobsons and Don Habels. Open to members and invited guests by reservation only.

C ountry Club Women welcome speaker

Camano Country Club Women’s Club will hold their monthly meeting, program and luncheon Mon, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. Guest speaker is Camano Island artist, Dan Koffman, and his topic is “communicating through art.” Men and guests are welcome. Debbie Christopher will be the caterer. Women’s bridge follows at 12:30 p.m., by reservation only.

T’ai Chi class begins Sept. 7

A T’ai Chi class will begin at the Camano Island Senior and Community Center Tuesdays 9:30-10:30 a.m. teaching balance, energy and relaxation through gentle graceful flowing movements. Taught by Jeanne Reynolds, accredited instructor with 30 years experience. 425-773-4119.

Quilters to resume monthly meetings

Camano Island Quilters a.m. group will resume monthly meetings Wed, Sept. 1, 10 a.m. at Odd Fellows Lodge, 96 S. Camano Ridge Road. The p.m. group will meet Thurs, Sept. 2, 6:30 p.m. at Stanwood United Methodist Church, corner of 102nd Drive and 271st Street NW in Stanwood. They say they will have a very busy year ahead preparing for the spring quilt show. New members are welcomed.

‘Dancing, singing’ in water class

A Million Dollar Mermaid class, with dancing and singing in the water, will be at the Camano Country Club swimming pool Sun, Sept. 5, noon to 1 p.m. Sign up at the club or on line, milliondollarmermaid@ wavecable.com.

Coming events at the senior center

First dance of the season at the Camano Senior and Community Center is Sat., Sept. 19, 7 -10 p.m. featuring the great music of Camano Junction. Tickets available at the door. Dance lessons are Sept. 13, Learn to cha-cha and East Coast swing. Classes are six weeks, call the center to sign up or more information, 387-0222. Computer classes start Sept. 20, and intro to MS word 2007 starts Sept. 23. Call or come by the center for more information. Date for the holiday craft and gift bazaar is Nov. 20 and 21, and crafters, take note, that registrations are being taken now. Space is limited, sign up early, camanocenter.org.

Labor Day concert is announced

Fire Sirens set brown bag lunch meeting

Madrona Fire Sirens meet at noon Wed, Sept. 1, at the Madrona Fire Station, 916 West Fifth Ave. at Tarragon. Brown bag lunch, dessert and beverages provided.

Honoring those people lost on 9/11

The National Day of Service is Sat, Sept. 11, and in honor of those lost on 9-11, the public is invited to join in a service project in two different locations. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and members of the Stanwood Camano community, will meet 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at either Church Creek Park or Camano Island State Park. Dave Matten’s ‘Meet & Greet’ Saturday

Meet Island County Assessor Dave Mattens Sat., Sept. 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Islander Espresso & Café, 848 N Sunrise Blvd. Have a cup of coffee and a fresh scone while visiting with Dave, ask questions or just say “hi,” say sponsors of the “Meet and Greet.”

Nature program is on forest fires

AWANA starts at chapel Wednesday

Camano Chapel will be starting AWANA Wed., Sept. 8, with registration night at 6:30 p.m. and leader training at 7 p.m. This is not a regular club night. Sept. 15 will be the first night of regular club, 6:30-8 p.m. Jr. High and High School meet 5:30-6:15 p.m. There is a fee per child or per family. For more info, contact 387-7202.
