Intoxicated man makes false report, I.D. theft
Island County Sheriff’s
deputies on Camano Island
responded to the following
recently:
• A 911 caller on Aug. 8 reported that he had been spraying insecticide and accidentally sprayed himself, too. He said he was “covered in insecticide,” and that it felt “like spiders were crawling on him.” He said it was “killing him.” Deputies responded to the house, a Sandell Road residence, but found no one home. After searching the area, they left. The 30-year-old man called 9-1-1 again and admitted that the previous call had been a prank, and that he ran into the woods when deputies arrived at his house. He agreed to meet a deputy nearby. When he arrived, the deputy noticed a strong odor of intoxicants and asked the man how much he had to drink. The man said, “Enough.” When prompted further, he said he drank 12 beers. The man was arrested and booked into Island County Jail in connection with false reporting. His blood-alcohol content registered .137.
• Deputies have continued to receive frequent reports of identity theft and credit card fraud. Deputies said many thieves obtain personal information by pilfering mailboxes — one of the best defenses for citizens is to use locking mailboxes. These have a slot to receive postal deliveries, but require a key to open them and retrieve the mail. Citizens worried about
fraud should also closely
monitor their account activity. ........
• On Aug. 10, a 76- year-old man reported that sometime between Aug. 3 and Aug. 6, someone had entered an unlocked cabinet outside his weekend residence on Tillicum Beach Drive. A 14-inch Echo chainsaw and a 25-foot tape measure were missing.
• A 59-year-old South Camano Drive resident reported that a padlock had been removed from the hasp on her garage door. Nothing in the garage was missing or disturbed.
• On Aug. 8, a 52-yearold woman and her 59- year-old husband reported harassing phone calls from a 20-year-old man who had previous associations with their daughter.
• Deputies received reports of a domestic disturbance at a Country Club Drive residence on Aug. 19. The caller, a 22-year-old man, reported that another man was smashing things with a golf club. Deputies arrived to find three vehicles in the driveway with slashed tires, broken windshields and other damage. The suspect, a 27-year-old man, was recommended for charges in connection with two counts of second-degree assault. The incident apparently began with an altercation between the man and his brother, and involved the brother’s girlfriend.
• Deputies were dispatched to a motor-vehicle accident near the intersection of East Cross Island Road and N. East Camano Drive, on Aug. 17. A 25- year-old woman driving a black 2010 Ford Escape was following a gray 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by a 46-year-old woman with two 11-year-old boy passengers. When traffic suddenly slowed, the Escape collided with the back end of the Tahoe. No one was injured. The driver of the Escape was cited in connection with following too closely for the conditions.
• On Aug. 23, a 41-yearold woman reported that she had seen a red 1998 Ford F-150 crossing the SR 532 bridge, westbound, “all over the roadway.” A deputy intersected and pulled behind the truck in heavy commuter traffic. The truck was traveling 10-15 mph under the posted 50-mph speed limit and weaving back and forth. The vehicle made a slow left-hand turn without signaling or yielding, causing oncoming traffic to slow abruptly to avoid collision. The deputy stopped the vehicle and approached the 48-year-old male driver.
Near the vehicle, the deputy noticed the strong odor of intoxicants. The man’s speech was slurred, and he was unable to produce a driver’s license, even after rummaging through his vehicle.
When he got out of the truck to look behind his seat, he displayed poor balance and coordination. He adamantly denied having been drinking. Based on the man’s behavior, and the fact that his breath smelled of intoxicants, the deputy took him into custody. Before being placed in the patrol car, the man peed himself while standing on the side of the road.
He was taken to the Camano precinct, where he declined to provide a breath sample, stating that he wanted to speak with an attorney. He did so, and eventually agreed to take a breath test. His blood-alcohol content registered .253. He was cited in connection with driving under the influence of alcohol.
