Art
Opening Sept. 2, with a reception from 5-8 p.m., the Arts Council of Snohomish County is thrilled to present “Moments: Alden Mason, Steve Klein, and Karen Simonson,” an exhibit bringing together renowned artists of different generations and media. Alden Mason’s early experimentation with watercolors and oils led to national and international recognition, including his 1970s Burpee Garden series named after the seed catalogs that came to the Skagit Valley farm where he grew up. His protégée, Karen Simonson, also strives for inventive ways to express her inspiration by combining media. She begins each piece with a layer of acrylic paint then switches to oil, letting the underpainting serve as a base for exploring interesting shapes and forms. The show also features glass artist Steve Klein, who’s approach to kiln working highlights the beauty of glass and its relationship with light. The Arts Council gallery is inside the historic Monte Cristo Hotel, 1507 Wall St., in downtown Everett. The gallery is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday - Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Fishtown at MoNA
An exploration of the creative settlement that grew up on the Skagit River delta when artists, poets and scholars occupied abandoned fishermen’s shacks beginning in the late 1960s, “Fishtown and the Skagit River,” continues at the Museum of Northwest Art through Oct. 3. An exhibit 40 years in the making, Fishtown focuses on this unique Northwest community during the years 1968 to 1980, when artists lived simply, using basic materials to create works steeped in history, philosophy and world cultures, all infused by their surroundings on the river. The Asparagus Moonlight Group show in Seattle secured them a place in the history of Northwest art. MoNA is open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday, and noon – 5 p.m., Sundays and Mondays, at 121 S. First Street, La Conner. For information see www.museumofnwart.org or call 360- 466-4446.
