A project of Camano Action for a Rural Environment (C.A.R.E.) “Camano Honors Earth” is planned for Saturday, Sept. 11, noon -7 p.m. at Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park, 2345 Blanche Way, Camano Island. The event will feature an environmental art exhibition, speakers, interactive educational activities, poetry, music and art. Educational activities from noon to 4 pm will be followed by a reception with the artists from 4-7 pm.
V olunteers needed for Council on Aging
Snohomish County residents interested in issues facing elders and people with disabilities are needed to serve on the Snohomish County Council on Aging. Applications are due Fri, Sept. 17. The CoA is a 30-member citizen board that advises the county executive, Snohomish County Long Term Care, and the county’s Human Services Department’s office on aging. The offices manage federal, state and local funds and rely on advice from the CoA. New members will begin three-year terms starting Jan. 1, 2011. The CoA meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month (except December) 9:30 a.m. to noon. It is expected that every council member attend regularly and join at least one sub-committee. All meetings occur during work hours. The CoA strives for a membership that is geographically balanced throughout the county, urban and rural, ethnic and racial minorities. Car wash benefits heart association
Union Bank (formerly Frontier Bank), at 8870 271st St. NW, in Stanwood, will be hosting a car wash 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thurs, Aug. 26, and Thurs, Sept. 2, as a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. They hope to raise $1,000 by charging $5 per wash.

Stanwood Camano Fire Department invites the community to gather together Sat, Sept. 11 for a 9/11 memorial and fire station dedication at the new Vista/Madrona Fire Station, 273 N. West Camano Drive. Time to be announced later.
Port Susan Middle School open house
Port Susan Middle School will have an open house Tues, Aug. 31, for 6th graders, 5-6 p.m., and for 7th and 8th graders, 6-7 p.m. Student schedules will be available.

‘Map your neighborhood’ course set
A “Map Your Neighborhood” facilitator’s course is scheduled for Mon, Aug. 30, 6-8 p.m. at the Stanwood Fire Station, 8117 267th St. NW. The course will explain the program and prepare people to present the “Map Your Neighborhood” program in their communities. Rorex and Murat at Leatherheads
Rich Rorex and Greg Murat will perform at Leatherheads Pub & Eatery, 10209 270th St NW, Stanwood, 7 p.m. Sat, Aug. 28. No cover. Leatherheads welcomes musicians who want to perform original, newly-composed material, or who just want to play music informally, Sunday evenings 6-8 p.m. for 45 minutes or take the whole block. Gerry Andal’s has reopened in Stanwood
Gerry Andal’s restaurant in Stanwood has re-opened, and the owners want patrons to know that the menu is exactly the same, with some new ideas in the works. The restaurant was voted the Best of Stanwood/Camano.
International swim across Port Susan
Pastor Brad Hering of River of Life Community Church on Camano Island has announced a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis. An international swim across Port Susan honors Maranda Hansen and includes local swimmers as well as swimmers from Mexico, including the Mexican National Champion, and coach Kristian Thalin from Sweden. The swim begins at the Camano Country Club Beach 2 around 2:30 p.m. Tues, Aug. 24. Swimmers will relay east to Warm Beach Camp and back, about 10 miles. Kayaks and a safety boat will escort the swimmers. A barbecue will be held after the swim, starting around 7 p.m. at Beach 2.
Auditions open for September workshop
META Performing Arts has announced an audition workshop Sept. 2, 6-8:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church, 15th and Broadway, Mount Vernon. To register, call 877-490-6382. The workshop is timed to be especially helpful to 7- to 13-year-olds who will be auditioning Sept. 8 and 9 for META’s upcoming production of the musical, “How to Eat Like a Child,” but the workshop is open to all youth, regardless of their interest in the upcoming show. The workshop is not a pre-requisite for auditioning nor does it guarantee casting in the show, which runs Dec. 3-12 at the historic downtown Lincoln Theatre, in Mount Vernon.
Victims Memorial Wall applications open
Families of someone killed in an alcohol- or drug-related crash, may arrange for placement of a free tile in their loved one’s name on the Snohomish County DUI Victims Memorial Wall. Residents of Snohomish County are eligible. The eighth round of tiles on the wall at McCollum Park will be unveiled Oct. 6. Children in the Garden Series
Children will be introduced to ground covers and succulents that can be used to create miniature gardens Sat, Aug. 28, 10 a.m. at Christianson’s Nursery, where there is a fee for classes and reservations are required, at 360-466-3821. L ife, music of Edward Grieg is program
Daughters of Norway Thelma Lodge 26 will present a program on the life and music of Edward Grieg, with a slide show and music Sat, Sept. 18th, 10 a.m. at Normanna Hall, 2725 Oakes Ave., Everett. Guests are welcome. Membership is open to women of Scandinavian descent who are 13 and older.

Lion’s Club collects school supplies
The Stanwood Camano Lions Club is helping the Readiness to learn Foundation with the collection of school supplies and back packs for children of qualifying families. The red donation boxes, with the Lions’ logo, can be found in a number of local businesses. This project helped over 200 local children last year.
SHS athletic department’s fundraiser
Tom Wilfong, assistant principal and athletic director at Stanwood High School, has authorized All-American Sports Posters to produce SHS’s athletic posters. They will help the athletic department to raise much needed funding. The company will be contacting local businesses to line up community sponsorship for this program. ‘ Extravaganza’ helps send kids to camp
