Republicans announce family picnic

The 10th District Republicans are holding a potluck family picnic and bake sale Sat, Aug. 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stanwood-Camano Fairgrounds. This meet-and-greet event includes games and prizes, entertainment and the opportunity for the public to shake hands with representatives and candidates. Audition notice for dinner theater

Professional actors/actresses are wanted for a production of “Christmas on the Tumblin’ D,” scheduled during December at The Baylight Dinner Theatre at the Lights of Christmas at Warm Beach Camp. Roles are open for seven men and women, ages 20- 55. Ability to play a musical instrument helpful, and actors will be paid a stipend. Auditions will be held Aug. 23 at Warm Beach Camp, and Aug. 24 in Lynnwood; prepare a monologue and a song. Event helps to rebuild playground

A Tupperware Cash and Carry fund-raiser to help rebuild the Lake Goodwin playground is Fri, Aug. 20, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Lake Goodwin Park, 4726 Lakewood Road. AARP Driver Safety class next week

An AARP Driver Safety Class is scheduled Sat, Aug. 28 at the Stanwood Senior Center, 7430 276th St. NW. The eight-hour class for adults 50 and up begins at 9 a.m. Participants work through an interactive curriculum emphasizing defensive driving techniques. You do not need to be an AARP member to enroll. A fee is charged to cover the cost of materials. If you are a memer, bring your membership number to class. Teens invited to take a hike Tuesday

The Davis Place Teen Center is offering students in grades 6-12 a free hike at Four Springs Lake Preserve Tues, Aug 24, 1-4 p.m. Meet at Davis Place in Stanwood. Permission waivers are required and space is limited, so reserve a space with Jon, 629-5257.

Threshing bee features 1930’s machine

A 1930’s Red River special threshing machine will be threshing oats at the annual threshing bee presented by the Belleville Threshers, Lagerwood Farms and the Cascade Two Cylinder Club at 19095 Cook Road in Burlington, 10 a.m., Sat, Aug. 21. The exhibit will include a stationary baler, antique cars and tractors and the Skagit County Historical Museum will be serving lemonade and information about the museum. Hospice needs bilingual volunteers

Formerly called Skagit Hospice, Hospice of the Northwest serves Skagit, Island, Snohomish and San Juan counties, and is in need of volunteers who are bilingual, especially in Spanish, although it is not a requirement for volunteering. Bring old/unusual bike to Retro Ride

All bicycle enthusiasts are invited to the Skagit County Historical Museum’s fourth annual Retro Ride and Concours D’ Elegance Sat, Aug. 28. Bring an old, stylish or unusual bicycle and where a costume, which could be either period specific or fanciful. The ride will begin at the museum, 501 4th St., at the top of the hilll in La Conner. The day begins at 10 a.m. with a tour of the exhibit, “The Way We Played,” about recreation in the early days of Skagit County, which offers a review of bicycles and costumes. ‘Beneath the Salish Sea’ underwater film

An underwater odyssey through Puget Sound, “Beneath the Salish Sea,” will be shown at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., in Everett 7 p.m., Tues, Aug. 24, doors open at 6:30 p.m., and admission is free. This film “is as close as you can get to experiencing the life of a fish,” according to the BBC cinematographer who used bubble-free re-breather technology, the latest stealth diving equipment and state of the art high-definition cameras to make the film, which is packed with information about life in the greater Salish Sea, provided by marine biologist Florian Graner. Co-sponsored by the city of Everett, the Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee, and the Northwest Straits Foundation, donations to the foundation will be accepted.

North County Fire seeks firefighters

Applications are due Aug. 31 for volunteer firefighters who want to serve their community through North County Fire/EMS, which covers 100 square miles of North Snohomish County. Lion’s Club collects school supplies

The Stanwood Camano Lion’s Club is helping the Readiness to learn Foundation with the collection of school supplies and back packs for children of qualifying families. The red donation boxes, with the Lion’s logo, can be found in a number of local businesses. This project helped over 200 local children last year, and a greater need is anticipated this year.

SHS athletic department’s fundraiser

Tom Wilfong, assistant principal and athletic director at Stanwood High School, has authorized All-American Sports Posters to produce the school’s athletic posters this year. Police and firefighters will be thanked for their services at a “Life Savers BBQ” Thurs, Aug. 19 at Merrill Gardens; RSVP by Tuesday, Aug. 17. Firefighters will bring a truck for viewing and there will be live music. There is a cost. An Italian dinner is planned for Aug. 26. RSVP to 629-3445 by Aug. 24. A free workshop for veterans with Mahala Murphy-Martinn, of Senior Assurance Consultants, Inc., is planned in September, to help vets learn about benefits and how to apply for them.

School supply giveaway is this Saturday

New backpacks full of school supplies and gently-used clothing will be available at the third annual community school supply giveaway Sat, Aug. 21 at Stanwood Foursquare Church (across from Stanwood Hardware), 10 a.m.-noon.

Backpacks filled with free supplies

Customers may purchase specially designated backpacks for $9.99 that Haggen has filled with school supplies valued at $23 that the store is donating. The filled backpacks will be given to local schools and organizations for distribution to children in need. The drive will continue until the stores run out of the backpacks.

Screening detects diseases

The Skagit Regional Heart & Vascular Institute offers a community screening for all adults over age 18 on Tuesday mornings. The screening includes the following tests and results are immediate: ankle brachial pressure index to help detect peripheral artery disease (no caffeine or nicotine for one hour prior); blood pressure; full lipid profile for cholesterol plus glucose requires 12 – 14 hour fast, water and medications only (no alcohol 24 hours prior); body composition testing. ‘Extravaganza’ helps send kids to camp

Sat, Aug. 28, Warm Beach Camp will host the 11th annual August Extravaganza benefit auction and country fair to help send kids to camp. From 9 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. more than 350 items will be auctioned, including garden equipment, sports memorabilia, dining opportunities, gift certificates, craft items, tools, golf packages, sporting event tickets, vacation packages, home furnishings, etc. Free activities for kids include miniature train rides, clowns and face painting, bouldering wall climbing, and petting farm. Proceeds provide scholarship funds for kids in need to attend summer camp. Food concessions are available for lunch, there is no charge to attend the event and parking is free. Preserving the bounty of your garden

Now that all the hard work is paying off with the garden flourishing, full of produce, it’s the perfect time to learn food preservation techniques with Vivian Smallwood, a WSU Extension Master Food Preserver, along with Master Gardener Cindee Juel, in the next Know & Grow Workshop offered by the WSU Skagit County Extension Master Gardeners in partnership with WSU - Mount Vernon NWREC. The Know & Grow workshop on preserving the bounty of your garden is 1 - 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, in the NWREC Sakuma Auditorium at WSU Mount Vernon, 16650 SR 536 (Memorial Highway). Camano Honors Earth

Camano Action for a Rural Environment (C.A.R.E.) has announced a new event, “Camano Honors Earth” to be held Saturday, Sept. 11, noon -7 p.m. in collaboration with Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park, at 2345 Blanche Way, Camano Island. This educational and inspirational event will feature an environmental art exhibition, speakers, interactive educational activities, poetry, music and art. Speakers include Hugh Shipman, a coastal geologist talking on climate change’s impact on shorelines and Island County Commissioner John Dean addressing community service as a way of honoring earth.
