North County Fire/EMS is accepting applications for volunteer firefighters, due Aug. 31. North County Firefighters and Paramedics cover 100 square miles of North Snohomish County responding to all types of emergencies, including fires, motor vehicle collisions, aircraft crashes, BLS and ALS medical emergencies, and water rescues. Application forms may be picked up at the district office, 19727 Marine Drive, or downloaded from the Web at northcountyfireems.com. For information call 425-754-4342.

Lions club collects school supplies

The Stanwood Camano Lions Club is helping the Readiness to Learn Foundation with the collection of school supplies and back packs for children of qualifying families. The red donation boxes, with the Lions logo, can be found in a number of local businesses. This project helped more than 200 local children last year.

Backpacks collected for free supplies

Haggen stores has backpacks filled with school supplies for local children in need and customers may purchase them for $9.99 to donate to the cause. Valued at $23, the backpacks are available until the supply runs out.

School supply giveaway is Aug. 27 The third annual community school supply giveaway is Sat., Aug. 21 at Stanwood Foursquare Church (across from Stanwood Hardware), 10 a.m.-noon. New backpacks, school supplies and gently used clothing will be available.

SHS Athletic Department’s fundraiser

Tom Wilfong, assistant principal and athletic director at Stanwood High School, has authorized All-American Sports Posters to produce SHS’s athletic posters this year. The poster is a fund raiser for the athletic department. The company will be contacting local businesses to line up sponsorships. Questions? Jake’s House community sale this week

Jake’s House Prayer and Worship Center has announced a community sale of used furniture, clothing, kitchen goods, baby items, books, crafts, cookies and collections Aug. 11-14, at 18824 Smokey Point Blvd., 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wed.-Fri. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Watershed council to meet in PUD room

The Stillaguamish Watershed Council will meet Wed., Aug. 11 at the Stanwood PUD Office meeting room, 1-4 p.m. Formerly the Stillaguamish Implementation Review Committee (SIRC), the council is comprised of many groups interested in the Stillaguamish River Valley. It is celebrating its 20th year anniversary.

Fifty years for Silvana Fire Department

The public is invited to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Snohomish County Fire District 19, Sat, Aug 21, noon to 4 p.m. in Silvana. For details, call 652-7517.

Coming up at the Stanwood Library

The summer reading program’s “Dunk-a-rama-water-balloonbama lama-ding-dong” at the Stanwood Library is Sat, Aug. 14, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The “wild” afternoon filled with water games, bubble prints, a dunk tank, treats and carnival games will be across the street from the library at the community resource center., open to all ages (in the event of rain, the library will host a movie matinee of “Flushed Away” funded by the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library.

Summerfest

The Warm Beach Community Park will again be the scene of “Summerfest, 2010” Sat, Aug. 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission, 19016 94th Street. Food, children’s games, silent auction and baked goods. A “promenade” will kick the event off at 9:45 a.m. beginning on Soundview.

Female vocalist of the year at local pub

Bluegrass vocalist Dale Ann Bradley will perform solo at Leatherheads Pub & Eatery, 10209 270th St NW in Stanwood, Wed., Aug. 11, 7 p.m. Bradley grew up in a self-described “backwoods holler” down a rural road where electricity and running water weren’t available until she was in high school. Merrill Gardens hosts numerous events

A book signing with lifelong Stanwood resident Ray Brandstrom, will be Thurs, Aug. 12, 2 p.m. “Taking the Lead” tells the story of Ray’s childhood, WWII career and his family life. Police and fire departments will be thanked for their services Thurs, Aug. 19, with a “Lifesaver’s Barbecue,” RSVP by Aug. 17. Firefighters will bring a truck for viewing and there will be live music. There is a cost. On Aug. 26, there will be an Italian theme dinner. RSVP to 629-3445 by Aug. 24. In September a free workshop for veterans with Mahala Murphy-Martin, of Senior Assurance Consultants, Inc. will help vets learn how to apply for benefits.

Readers discuss ‘Jackdaws’

The public is welcome to join a 6 p.m. discussion of “Jackdaws” by Ken Follett, with the Stanwood Book Group meeting Wed, Aug. 11, at Merrill Gardens Library, 7212 265th St. NW, Stanwood. The Book Discussion Collection Project is funded through donations made to the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation. On Tues, Aug. 17, 10 a.m., “The Old Man and the Sea” will be discussed at the Stanwood Library, covering the literary merit of this tale about an aging Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal. Ernest Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature shortly after publishing this novel.

North and South Dakota picnic Saturday

The annual North and South Dakota picnic will start at noon Sat, Aug. 14, at Church Creek Park in Stanwood. Anyone with a connection to either North or South Dakota is encouraged to come meet folks from “back home.” To balance the meal, those with last names beginning A-L bring a main dish, and those with M-Z, salads and/or relishes, rolls, etc. Also, bring your own beverage, no alcohol. Rib dinner at Silvana bingo games

Tennis tournament open to seniors

Camano Island Tennis Group will have a tournament Fri., Aug. 13 at the tennis courts next to the Community Health Clinic, 127 N. East Camano Drive. Radio station seeks nominations

KSER Radio is now accepting nominations for the 2010 Voice of the Community Award, whitch recognizes local voices who speak up about community or cultural concerns with positive results for the residents of Snohomish or Island counties. If you know individuals, groups or businesses that have made a difference for the community, consider nominating them for the award. Nominations are due Aug. 13. Christianson’s Nursery classes set

“Designer Stepping Stones” will be offered Sat., Aug. 14, 1-4 p.m. at Christianson’s Nursery on Best Road west of Mount Vernon. Reservations required, call 360-466-3821 and there is a fee. Mosaic artist Constance Funk will instruct this make-and-takeclass to design a personal stepping stone. Taste of La Conner is Friday

The monthly “Taste of La Conner” is Fri., Aug. 13, 4-8 p.m., when participating eateries use fresh, local ingredients to offer something different and exciting. All tickets must be pre-sold by 5 p.m. the day of the event; ticket also gets you into the Museum of Northwest Art. O ld Time Fiddlers meet Friday nights

The Old Time Fiddlers meets on the second and fourth Friday evenings, Aug. 13 and 27 and Sept. 10 and 24, at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave. NE, Arlington. Celtic jam is at 5 p.m., workshop at 6, circle jam at 7. Coffee, tea, juice, and snacks throughout the evening. Listeners and acoustic musicians of all ages with their instruments are welcome.

‘Extravaganza’ helps send kids to camp

Warm Beach Camp presents the 11th annual August Extravaganza Sat., Aug. 28, a benefit auction and country fair to raise funds to help send kids to camp with more than 350 items to bid on including yard and garden, sports memorabilia, dining opportunities, gift certificates, craft items, tools, golf packages, sporting event tickets, vacation packages, home furnishings, etc. Free activities for kids include miniature train rides, clowns and face painting, bouldering wall climbing, and petting farm. Food concessions are available for lunch, there is no charge to attend the event and parking is free.
