Councilman Cooper heading to Edmonds, as mayor

By ADAM STEWART Staff Reporter

Snohomish County Councilman Mike Cooper announced last week that he has accepted the position of mayor for his hometown, the city of Edmonds.

He won the job in a 4-3 vote by the Edmonds City Council last Tuesday and resigned from the county council on Friday.

Cooper will fill in the remainder of former Mayor Gary Haakenson’s term through 2011.

The third-term mayor stepped down last month to work under Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon.

Cooper’s District 3 county council position will be filled by another Democrat. Officers from the party precinct committee will select three candidates to be reviewed by the county council next month.

Lynwood City Council Vice President Stephanie Wright and Edmonds City Councilman D.J. Wilson have indicated interest in the position for the remainder of Cooper’s term through 2011.
