Drivers caught texting or chatting on a cell phone before July 1 may be eligible for a refund on their citation.
Washington state’s Department of Licensing (DOL) announced “that it stands ready to reimburse local governments for fiscal impacts related to an oversight in updating a state traffic offense rule book.” Full Story

Councilman Cooper heading to Edmonds, as mayor
Snohomish County Councilman Mike Cooper announced last week that he has accepted the position of mayor for his hometown, the city of Edmonds.
He won the job in a 4-3 vote by the Edmonds City Council last Tuesday and resigned from the county council on Friday.
Cooper will fill in the remainder of former Mayor Gary Haakenson’s term through 2011. Full Story

SnoCo Fire Marshal issues outdoor burn ban
Due to high fire danger and expected hot and dry weather conditions, the Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office has issued a modified outdoor burning ban for unincorporated areas of Snohomish County.
This ban prohibits outdoor burning except for recreational fires. Recreational fires are less than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high and are for cooking and pleasure only. Full Story

Reporting poaching and other fish and wildlife violations to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) just got easier.
WDFW has added a new text-messaging option for reporting activity that threatens fish, wildlife and critical habitat. Tip411 allows users to send a text message to WDFW’s communications dispatch center. Full Story
Spokane’s Centennial Trail designated National Recreation Trail
Spokane also has a Centennial Trail and it’s been designated a National Recreation Trail by Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.
The eastern Centennial Trail State Park is a 37-mile paved trail that runs from Nine Mile Falls near Spokane, to the Idaho border where it connects to the North Idaho Centennial Trail. Full Story
New Beards Hollow Ocean Overlook opens near Ilwaco
The new Beards Hollow Ocean Overlook on State Route 100 near Ilwaco and Cape Disappointment State Park, was officially dedicated May 26.
The event also will marked the official opening of the recently-paved Ilwaco section of the Discovery Trail and the construction of a multi-use trail from the Beards Hollow parking lot to North Head Road along SR 100 Loop. Full Story
Women’s outdoor skills workshop
Women will learn the basics of fishing, hunting and other outdoor skills at the 13th annual workshop coordinated by Washington Outdoor Women (WOW) in September.
The two-day workshop runs Sept. 17-19 at Camp River Ranch in Carnation, offering sessions led by Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) experts and other certified instructors. Full Story
Volunteer campground hosts still needed at some DNR recreation areas
DNR is still looking for volunteer campground hosts for several of its recreation areas in the state. Hosts have two primary duties: They conduct general campground maintenance and act as a primary point of contact for campers.
All hosts must complete basic first aid training and pass a Washington State Patrol criminal background check. Full Story
