Toby Strotz and members of the band Strutz are featured at the Strutz festival this weekend in Darrington. + + + Ad#:S TA NWO OD_FAIR_ADS Sa lesperson:LISA PAYNE Festival of the Stillaguamish River The 21st Annual Stillaguamish Festival of the River & Pow Wow is a free family event Aug. 14 and 15 on the banks of the south fork Stillaguamish River at River Meadows County Park. Honoring the environment and cultures of the Pacific Northwest, the festival features environmental education exhibits, Native American arts and crafts, music and pow wow, a logging show, nature walks and children’s activities. Visitors will learn about water quality, salmon habitat, and the watershed. The mission of the festival is to help people who live and work in the Stillaguamish watershed and surrounding regions understand how their actions can make their environment cleaner for people, fish and wildlife. Presented by the Stillaguamish Tribe, for the first time in many years there’s a $5 per car charge for parking, but admission remains free to all.

Weekend events include the Stilly Fun Run, starting 9 a.m. Saturday, the raptor rehabilitation display, a brain exhibit from Pacific Science Center, salmon bake dinner for $12, traditional storytelling, Fin the Giant Chum, fly tying and casting, sand sculpture, crafts and food vendors, and a silent auction to benefit the tribe’s programs.

Literary Shoot-Out at Skookum Brewery

A literary shoot-out will determine the best between western writers Zane Grey and Louis L’Amour, at Skookum Brewery Aug. 1, in a fundraiser for Sno-Isle Libraries presented by the Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation. Professional actors use biographical information, book titles, and storylines to battle it out with each other over who is the best. The action takes place in a western setting , complete with chuckwagon, horses, and a barn, at 19529 17th Drive NE, Arlington 2- 4 p.m. Aug. 1. Trimble speaks on writing novels

A Camano Island resident, author Mary E. Trimble, will share her process for researching and crafting a novel and will read from her latest book, “Tenderfoot” on 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31 at the Stanwood Library. Set with a backdrop of the 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, the romantic suspense story, takes place on a working cattle ranch.

A discussion of “The Old Man and the Sea” by Ernest Hemingway will begin 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17. The novel, won the Nobel Prize in Literature, is about an aging Cuban fisherman and his supreme ordeal. It’s available in a variety of formats for reading, listening and viewing.

Shadows of the Past

Families are invited to journey into the past and hear from John Muir, P.B. Van Trump and Fay Fuller among others at Mount Rainier’s annual Shadows of the Past program, which has expanded to four nights throughout the summer with two more left, Aug. 7 and 21. Park rangers and volunteers will lead visitors along the Trail of the Shadows where characters influential in the creation of Mount Rainier as a national park will come to life and share their stories of the mountain. Ranger-led lantern tours depart every 20 minutes from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and last about 90 minutes. The program begins at the National Park Inn at Longmire, rain or shine. The program is free with park admission and tokens are issued starting at 8 p.m. in front of the inn. Wear sturdy shoes and bring a warm jacket, insect repellant and a flashlight. La Conner Yacht & Car Show

The 10th annual La Conner Classic Boat & Car Show presents classic cars, show cars, classic yachts, or work boats, along with a pancake breakfast at the Swinomish Yacht Club served up by the La Conner Sea Scouts, 7:30–11 a.m. for $7 per person. There will be in-water demonstrations, food court, raffle prizes, live radio remote by KBRC Classic Hits station 1430AM & 102.1FM and more!

Camano Honors Earth

A new event on Camano Island, “Camano Honors Earth” will feature an environmental art exhibit, speakers, poetry and music with educational activities for the whole family on watersheds, certified backyard habitats and Summit Academy. Artwork selected by gallery owner Karla Matzke will be shown through September at the Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park, 2345 Blanche Way on Camano Island, where the event is presented by Camano Action for a Rural Environment (C.A.R.E.) Saturday, Sept. 11, noon to 7 p.m.
