Art

“Landing Zone” by artist Peter Reiquam has been recognized by Americans for the Arts as one of the best public art projects in the nation. The artwork at Paine Field Community Park was Snohomish County’s first project since the inception of the Snohomish County Arts Commission in 2006, and the county’s percent for the arts program. This recognition validates the value of art in creating a cultural landscape in Snohomish County by integrating artworks into neighborhoods, plazas and public places. The functional art piece provides a unique shelter on the plaza at the park in the form of a 16-foot diameter flying saucer with seating provided by natural boulders suggesting an alien landscape. A cast concrete “X” marks the fictional landing zone. “Landing Zone” puts a humorous spin on the theme of flight that is appropriate for the park near Paine Field. The 2010 Public Art Year in Review recognizes 40 projects from 29 cities in 15 states selected from more than 300 entries from across the country. “Landing Zone” by artist Peter Reiquam has been recognized by Americans for the Arts as one of the best public art projects in the nation.
