Fire commissioners to meet at Mabana
The Mabana Fire Station is hosting the next meeting of the fire commissioners Mon, July 26, 7:30 p.m. The commissioners hold some of their meetings at different fire stations on the island in order to be more accessible to all of the residents of Camano. This is the ideal time for the residents of the South End to find out more about the fire department. Refreshments will be provided by volunteers from the Mabana Flames, the fire department’s auxiliary.
Beat the heat at Camano Library
Activities, games and craft ideas that will keep you cool all summer long are set for Wed, July 28, 11 a.m. at the Camano Island Library Pilot Project. This is a school age program and no registration is required.
Free quilt show at Cama Beach
“Quilts on the Beach” will be a one-day July 31 showing of some of the 135 quilts made by the Cama Beach Quilters for the cabins at Cama Beach State Park. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., over 50 colorful quilts will be hanging outside on the buildings by the beach. This event is free to the public and shuttle service will be available for those who prefer not to walk down from the parking area. Many of the quilts will be available for sale. There will be activities for all ages including coloring, making fabric quilt blocks (with glue, needle and thread, or sewing machine), arranging quilt blocks on a design wall, and flower pounding. The Camano Island Quilters’ raffle quilt will be on display as well. The Center for Wooden Boats will also offer fun with toy boat building. Interesting items for sale in the newly reopened store will be for sale by the Cama Beach Foundation, proceeds help support educational programming at the park. Cama Beach Quilters have been making quilts for Cama since 2001, and received an “Outstanding Contribution” award from the Washington State Parks in 2008.
S ave August date for library activities
Music, ice cream, two raffles, and free books are the Camano Island Library Friends’ way of saying thanks for past community support. Sat, Aug. 21, noon to 3 p.m., the Friends are hosting a celebration with free activities and entertainment for all ages to show appreciation to Camano Islanders. Winners of two raffles for a quilt and pottery will be chosen, and musician Bryan Stratton, who specializes in popular songs of recent decades, will perform at 1 p.m. The children’s nursery rhyme-themed quilt, made by Amy Hickok and valued at $300, and the two-piece pottery set by Mark Eikeland valued at $80, are both on display at the Camano Island Library now. Tickets are available from library staff. Ice cream will be served and children’s activities provided in the courtyard outside the library at 848 N. Sunrise Blvd. Individuals and families who sign up as new library friends, will be invited to choose a free adult or children’s book.
Venders needed for holiday bazaar
Camano Country Club needs vendors for the 2010 holiday bazaar in November, with deadline for signing up Oct. 28. Call the club, 387-7957 or Sally, 387-9693. Vendor table application forms are available online at camanocountryclub.com.
Summer safety program about critters
Tony Cloud, of Camano’s Cloud Canine, will provide important information about being safe around dogs on trails, in parks and in your neighborhood Sat, July 24 at Camano Island State Park amphitheater, starting at 7:30 p.m. Hear about basic first aid for Fido and some good tips for travel with the family dog, too. Still time to sign up for car show
Camano Senior and Community Center’s annual collectors’ car show and flea market is Sat, Aug. 14, and all classic car owners are invited to register for the event, featuring Walt’s Pork Butt BBQ, Diamond Knot beer garden, Rockaway Beach Band and a flea market.
