The Silvana Community Fair is Sat., July 31, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Viking Hall and fields surrounding downtown Silvana with indoor and outdoor exhibits, including cows, goats, rabbits, poultry, swine, sheep, dogs; for entertainment, a petting zoo, pony rides, food, games, grease pole, vendor booths and vintage tractors. Entry and parking are free. The Silvana Fair has several goals: promote community spirit, help youth prepare for upcoming fairs, and provide a family-friendly day of wholesome activities. The 2010 Stanwood Camano Fair t-shirts are now available at Eagle’s Nest, 9520 271 Street NW. Theme for this year is “Small Town, Big Fair.” The “official” color is lime green, but shirts are available in other colors. Prices are the same for small through X-large, with 2X and 3X priced a little higher.

Fair board seeks volunteers to help

The Stanwood-Camano Fair is seeking any volunteers that would like to have fun helping at the community fair: selling tickets, working in the youth or adult exhibit hall during the air, taking entries for the fair, painting or general maintenance are just a few of the options. Change for entering fair exhibits

All youth and adult indoor exhibits will be accepted Tues, Aug. 3, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wed, Aug. 4, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Entries can be art, photography, baking, sewing, crafts, vegetables, eggs and flowers. Demonstrations are also strongly encouraged. Exhibitor’s handbooks are no longer available at local businesses. Those interested may pick up one at the fairgrounds or online, stanwoodcamanofair.org.

Old-Fashioned community ‘hymn sing’

The public is invited to an old-fashioned community “hymn sing” Sat, July 24, 7 p.m., at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in old west Stanwood, 2 blocks north of Twin City Foods, 27201 - 99th Ave NW. The event will feature the “Fellowship Quartet” of Seattle and Camano. Admission is free but donations will be gladly accepted.

‘Back to school’ Lions Club project

Stanwood Camano Lions Club and The Readiness to Learn Foundation are teaming up to collect backpacks and school supplies for children of qualifying families. Look for the red box with the Lions logo in area businesses, in order to donate.

Camwood Players hold audition Sunday

Camwood Players will hold an audition for their autumn show, Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” Sun., July 25, 1 to 3 p.m. at the Stanwood Library. A role is available for one male actor in his 40’s or 50’s (female roles have been cast). Auditions will be cold readings from the script. For more information, visit camwoodplayers.com.

Coming up at the Stanwood Library

“Fireside Fun and Fables,” Thurs, July 22, 11 a.m., cozy up to the campfire for simmering story stew flavored with activities to spark the imagination of school-age children. “Making Manga,” is Sat, July 24, 11 a.m. – noon, for teens. Manga artist Nicole Pelham will discusses the basics of creating one’s own manga. Call the library to pre-register, 629-3132. Events funded by the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library.

Neighborhood barbecue and picnic

At 5:30 p.m. Fri, July 30, Stanwood United Methodist Church will again host an annual neighborhood barbecue/picnic for members, neighbors and friends. Hamburgers, veggie burgers or hot dogs, along with salads and desserts will be served. A display of antique cars will be an added feature. Address is 27128 102 Drive NW; phone is 629-9555.

Hero Quilters meet at Smokey Point

The Stanwood-Camano Hero Quilters will meet at Aunt Mary’s Quilt Shop Sat, July 24, 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; address is 3323 169th Pl NE Suite 1, Smokey Point. “We make quilts for wounded soldiers given through American Hero Quilts,” said a quilter. Camp offers family focused retreat

Warm Beach Camp will host “Oasis Family Camp,” Aug. 2-8 for families looking for an enriching getaway. The week-long retreat offers insightful speakers and Bible studies, daily worship, age-specific programs and abundant recreation options for the whole family. MOMS Club sets membership meetings

The MOMS Club of Stanwood/Camano/Arlington has scheduled its 10 a.m. membership meetings for the coming year at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271 Street NW, every third Monday of the month. This month’s meeting, however, will be Thurs, July 22, 10-11 a.m., at the Arlington Boys & Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave NE, Arlington. Quilceda Carvers set weekend events Quilceda Carvers, with members in and around Stanwood- Camano, have set their 10th annual “Spit ‘n’ Whittle” July 30- Aug. 1 at Friday Creek Campground, Burlington. There will be two sessions of free carving classes Friday and Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. Meals include potluck dinner Friday, with all other meals served at small cost. Friday evening will host an entertainment and open mic. There is RV camping as well as tents, call 360-659-6778 for reservations. Take Bow Hill Road exit 236, turn right for 8 miles, then left onto Old Highway 99 for 7 miles. Turn left on Friday Creek Road and go 9 miles.

Jazz singer in home concert Friday

Dena DeRose and Chuck Deardorf will perform a house concert at the Carr home on Camano Island Fri, July 23, presented by JazzVox. DeRose has more than nine albums to her credit, including the Cadence Magazine choice for Album of the Year and Best Vocal Album. Young Aviator Camp has scholarships

Young Aviator Camps are July 26 – 30, and Aug. 9 – 13 at Arlington Airport, for ages 12-18. Camp runs mornings and includes learning about aviation subjects, an aviation field trip, and a flight lesson. Scholarships are available. Mark calendars for Summerfest 2010

The Warm Beach Community Park will again be the scene of “Summerfest, 2010” Sat, Aug. 14, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Free admission, located at 19016 94 Street. Lots of food, children’s games including Bouncy House, chix poop bingo, junquefest, silent auction and baked goods.

Registration open for homeschool co-op

Registration is open until the end of July at The Lighthouse Coop, a Christian home school co-op. It meets Wednesdays, Sept. 22 - Nov. 17, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. A second term runs from January to March. A family’s oldest child must be 6 years old and in the first grade to join. Register for MS bike ride this fall

More than 2,000 cyclists are expected to turn out Sept. 11 and 12 for the 2010 Bike MS Ride, presented by Point B. Starting from Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon, the ride follows scenic routes through Skagit, Whatcom and Island counties. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Greater Northwest Chapter, hosts the annual fundraiser, one of more than 100 rides across the country supporting multiple sclerosis programs and research. Christian Motorcyclists Ass’n meets

Morning Star Riders local chapter of CMA will meet Thurs, July 22 for dinner, fellowship, and review of upcoming rides, rallies and outreach events. Old Time Fiddlers meet this Friday

The Old Time Fiddlers meets Fri, July 23, at the Sisco Heights Community Club, 13527 99th Ave NE, Arlington. Celtic jam is at 5 p.m., workshop at 6, circle jam at 7 p.m. Small stage show if anyone is up for it. Coffee, tea, juice, and snacks throughout the evening.
