Council on Aging hosts reception
The Snohomish County Council on Aging will host its biennial legislative reception Wed, July 21, at the Everett Station, 3201 Smith Av., in Everett. Candidates for office and elected officials at the city, county, state and federal levels, as well as county residents, are invited. Instead of political speeches, attendees will hear from older adults and their family members about Meals on Wheels, caregiver services, and mental-health services. The 4 p.m. event begins with a pasta dinner followed by a brief program at 5 p.m. The reception ends at 6:30 p.m., allowing time for discussions on aging issues. The event is free of charge but people wishing to attend the dinner are asked to register by July 16. Backpacks collected for free supplies
Haggen Food & Pharmacy has launched a drive to collect backpacks filled with school supplies for local children in need. Customers may purchase specially-designated backpacks for $9.99. Haggen has filled the backpacks with a variety of school supplies valued at $23 that they are donating. The filled backpacks will be given to local schools and organizations for distribution. The drive will continue until the stores run out of the backpacks.

Friday night ‘art walks’ in east end
“Your Passport to Art,” is a series of three Friday evening art walks in “Olde East Stanwood,” where art will hang in some unexpected places. On the last Friday of each month this summer and fall, starting Fri, July 30, 5-8 p.m. art openings will be at 15 east end businesses including Snow Goose Bookstore, Candie’s Kids, Stanwood Grill, Gallery by the Bay, A Portrait by Indy, Pinch- Knitter, Let’s Frame It and the English Market, Tru-View Glass, Starlight Vintage Emporium, Laurie’s, The Station, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow, Madison’s Jewelry and Chen Can Cook. Each venue welcomes its featured artist with a reception during the art walk and the art will remain on display during regular business hours throughout the month. The event is a cooperative effort by the merchants showcasing both their businesses and the variety of local artistic talent, with Design Stanwood as sponsor.

Class of 1985 reunion notice
The SHS Class of 1985 will celebrate its 25th class reunion Fri, Aug. 6, 7 p.m. at Amigos in Stanwood, the same place they gathered five years ago for their 20th year reunion. Organizers are hoping everyone will spread the word.
Auditions open for ‘The Full Monty’
Director Julie Lindsey will be casting seven women and 10-12 men and one teen male for the musical “The Full Monty” which will run Sept. 24-Oct. 23 at the Anacortes Community Theatre, 10th and M in Anacortes. Auditions are July 17, noon-3 p.m., and July 18, 5-8 p.m. Singers will need to perform a song of their choosing that shows their vocal range, with their own accompanist or with recorded music. Group to discuss Alexie book
The Stanwood Book Group welcomes everyone to its monthly discussion. On Wed, July 14, 6 p.m., they will discuss Sherman Alexie’s “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” at Merrill Gardens Library, 7212 265th St. NW in Stanwood. On Fri, July 16, 11 a.m., Arty Smarty presents “DIY Sea Turtles and Tie-Dye Sea Life” at the Stanwood Library. School-age kids are invited to join artist Donna Golub to make their own underwater sea turtle and tie-dye sea life. No registration is required, and materials will be provided.
‘Hot Rod’s Blues Revue’ at hotel
The band “Hot Rod’s Blues Revue” will be at the Stanwood Hotel and Saloon Sat, July 17, 9 p.m., no cover. This new band made a big enough splash in 2009 to earn a Washington Blues Society “Best New Band” nomination this year. A mix of all-star players stompin’ and swingin’ their way in and around the blues and R&B.

Hootenanny auditions July 20 and 21
Vocalists, musicians and songwriters are encouraged to audition for upcoming performances of the Hometown Hootenanny. The Sept. 10 Hootenanny, a songwriters showcase, features performances of original compositions by local artists. Helping kids, families cope with cancer
Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center has announced a new program, CLIMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery) for families experiencing cancer. CLIMB gives emotional support to children who have a parent, guardian or grandparent with cancer. For children ages 6-11, meetings are 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays weekly for six weeks beginning July 13. Specially trained facilitators encourage open discussion about cancer, associated treatments, and possible side effects, in the Safeway Conference Room at SVH, free of charge funded by the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation.
