Art by the Bay The Stanwood-Camano festival of art and music, Art by the Bay is at the Stanwood- Camano Fairgrounds this year, at 6431 Pioneer Highway, south of Stanwood, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 10-11. The 18th annual festival features more than 100 artists, plants and garden art, a variety of great food, and live local music, all day both days. On Saturday, July 10, music starts with Don Mailloux, followed by Mark Bamber, Shay Mailloux, Smitton, John Amber-Oliver, Michael Gotz, Chaim & the Essentials and on Sunday, Marcia Kester, Ronnda Cadle, Selena Tibert, Amber Darland, Nick Vigarino, and the Acoustic Detour Unplugged will entertain the crowd. Camp Killoqua invites families to attend an open house to tour the camp and meet the staff, 2-4 p.m. Sat., July 10. A 185-acre facility, Killoqua offers day and resident camp programs for youth in grades K-12 throughout the summer. More information is available at 425-258-5437 or visit CampFireUSASnohomish. org. Located south of Stanwood, Killoqua is secluded yet easy to reach from all parts of Snohomish County; call ahead for driving directions. Operated by Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council since 1941, Camp Killoqua is offers year-round programming focused on youth: outdoor education, leadership programs and unique retreat space for youth organizations.

Portrait artist at Z’s

Audrey Roll Presslier, an artist well known for her ability to quickly capture peoples’ gestures in portraiture, is coming to “Z’s” in Stanwood, Friday, July 9, from noon until 3 p.m. We welcome everyone who would like to meet her and watch her work. Audrey has major pieces in the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Smithsonian, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Z’s is located at 9504 271st Street, across from the middle school. ‘Dirt! The Movie’ to run again

The first showing of “Dirt! The Movie” has filled up so a second screening is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fri., July 9, again at the Blackbird Bakery and Cafe in Stanwood. Second Window at Leatherheads Leatherheads Pub presents a Bellingham band that does alternative and classic rock, Second Window, 8 p.m. Sat., July 10. X-Treme Trivia is hosted by DJ Jami every Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m. No entry fee, cash and other prizes, followed by karaoke. Stanwood Democrats plan BBQ

The Stanwood Democrats will not have a monthly meeting on July 10, but they welcome all to a free salmon barbecue July 24, noon to 3 p.m at the grange at the Stanwood Camano Fairgrounds. For information call 629-2037.

It’s blueberry time at Christianson’s

Matt Groff, owner of Sound Landscape Blueberry Farm, will share the knowledge he gained from years of raising blueberries in Skagit Valley in a talk at Christianson’s Nursery Sat., July 10, 1-2 p.m. On Sat., July 17, there will be an illustrated talk about attracting birds to the garden, 11 a.m. to noon by Bob Barca from Hummingbird Hill on Whidbey Island. He will instruct participants on general garden practices, water sources, feeders, landscape design, and specific plants that birds like. Bible school at Cedarhome Baptist

Cedarhome Baptist in Stanwood will be holding Bible School July 12-16 for children 5-12 years old, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. There will be crafts, games, music and stories. “Kids have a lot of fun and still learn about God,” say organizers Rich and Sue Wayland. WWU reunion set for July 13-14

The Western Washington University Alumni Association will host its Golden Viking Society and reunion Tuesday and Wednesday, July 13-14, at Western’s campus in Bellingham, open to Western alumni from 1930-1965. Golden Vikings are alumni who graduated 50 or more years ago; this year the classes of 1958, 1959 and 1960 will be inducted into the Golden Viking Society. Activities include a salmon barbecue, talks and presentations, a dinner cruise, and an evening of music. Many of the activities are free although some involve a fee. Register now for soccer in the fall

SCYSC will be holding a soccer swap and walk in registration event at Heritage Park, behind Stanwood Middle School, noon–3 p.m. July 10. The deadline for registration for fall soccer is July 20, with an extra fee for late registrations through July 31. Registration can be done online at scysc.com. Donations to the soccer wap can be brought to Heritage Park that day.

Boating course taught at center

Safe boating education classes will be taught at the Stanwood Community and Senior Center July 13, 15, 20, 22 and 27, 7-9 p.m. for a fee. Learn the rules of the road, trailering, navigational aids, knots, safety requirements and state law. Successful completion of this course qualifies the participant for a Washington State Boater Education Card. Instructors: Skagit Bay Sail and Power Squadron. Childbirth Express, preparation classes

Skagit Valley Hospital is offering eight-hour intensive childbirth preparation classes. Clients who pay for the class will get a discount on the breastfeeding and newborn care class when registering for it at the same time as the Childbirth Express class. Dr. Andrew Stang’s retirement party

Cheese making in English, Spanish

Japanese students need homes

Compass International is bringing 22 Japanese youth to the Stanwood Camano area July 25- Aug. 22 and host families or couples are needed to put them up. Students go to English classes on week day mornings, then take local trips in the afternoons. Hosting can be for two weeks or the entire four-week visit. Child safety seat checks

Certified child safety seat technicians will assess seats for ageand size-appropriateness and proper installation 1-3 p.m. Thurs., July 15, at the main entrance of Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. This screening is highly recommended for parents-to-be, to learn how to safely install and use their car seat. Co-sponsored by Skagit Safe Kids, pre-registration is not required.
