Lyric Light Opera presents “The King & I” by Rodgers & Hammerstein at McIntyre Hall inMount Vernon June 19-27. The classic musical shares the story of the British governess brought to the court of Siam to tutor the king’s many children. As life in the Royal Palace progresses Anna and the King learn about each other’s cultures, begin to understand one another, ultimately falling in love in a very unlikely relationship. Commissioners host island forums
The Board of Island County Commissioners will again host a series of 6 p.m. public forums this year to solicit ideas and hear general concerns about local communities. Mon, June 21 is the first one, in Hearing Room 102B of the County Annex Building, 1 N.E. 6th Street, Coupeville. The second one is Tues, June 22, at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road. Islanders from throughout the county are welcome to attend. Other such forums will be held on South Whidbey and North Whidbey at a date, time, and location to be announced.
Public invited to library’s ‘birthday’
The Camano Island Library Pilot Project birthday bash and summer reading kickoff is Sat, June 19, 11 a.m. There will be a family friendly performance of “Singin’In the Tub” with Rick Myers. Summer reading will help Camano Animal Shelter Association (CASA) care for homeless animals. Funding for the event is provided by Camano Island Library Friends.
CARE seeks island poets
Camano Action for a Rural Environment (C.A.R.E.) is looking for island poets and judges for a nature poetry reading for Camano Honors Earth, to be held Sept. 11, at the Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park. All ages accepted. Contact Allison, 425-344-7829.
Vacation Bible School opens Monday
Camano Chapel Vacation Bible School is June 21 - 25, 9 a.m. – noon. The “Saddle Ridge Ranch” is calling all children ages four years old to those going into the fourth grade. Nature program about slugs, worms
Sat., June 19 in Camano Island State Park amphitheater, a 7:30 p.m. program on slugs and snails will be presented, as well as how Red Wiggler worms can help compost food waste to make rich soil for gardens. C loud’ s Canine classes scheduled
“Agility Fur Fun” is a June 15 class that teaches beginning agility course skills to those who wish to enjoy agility recreationally with their dog. Dogs must be in good health, current on vaccines, have basic obedience skills and be non-aggressive toward other people or pets. Class will begin Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. at Cloud’s Canine. New obedience classes begin Mon, June 28 at Camano Senior and Community Center. Each course is six weeks in length, with onehour group lessons that are limited in size, for a tuition fee. Grange sets dance lesson Friday
This month’s lesson at the South Camano Grange, is beginning waltz. The lesson starts at 7:30 p.m, June 18. Old Time Fiddlers camp on Camano

National ASK Day is June 21
The Island County Children’s Commission is in support of a campaign called “ASK,” which stands for Asking Saves Kids. It is dedicated to keeping children safe from harm, and reinforces the importance of gun safety in the home. The program is building towards the National ASK Day June 21. Amateur Radio Field Day next week
The Boeing Everett ham radio club (BEARONS) will be conducting simulated emergency communications Sat, June 26, 11 a.m., through Sun, June 27, 11a.m. This is a nation-wide contest, and temporary antenna setups, and radios powered by batteries and solar panels, will be used. Vivian Smallwood, a WSU certified master food preserver, will be sharing her knowledge of home food preservation Wed, June 23, 7 p.m. The step-by-step processes for canning, freezing and how to avoid the major canning sins, will be covered, at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N.East Camano Drive. Disaster Action Team meets Monday
The Camano Disaster Action Team of the American Red Cross will meet 7 p.m. Mon, June 21 at the Madrona Fire Hall, 916 West 5th Street, Camano Island. Meetings are open to members and anyone interested in learning about the American Red Cross. The Snohomish County Red Cross is also part of this chapter and people from Stanwood and surrounding areas are also invited. “We will have an exciting ‘tip of the month’ you won’t want to miss!” said a spokesperson.
