Shouts of congratulation rang from bleachers filled with friends and family members craning their necks to spot a special grad in a sea of red robes.

Principal Christine Gruver welcomed the crowd and addressed the graduates by asking the question: Where will you be in 20 years?

“All the answers are up to you,” said Gruver. “You’ve excelled in so many areas.”

Gruver commended the students’ accomplishments from winning the “Stilly Cup” and developing a solar panel project for the school, to receiving superior ratings in band and choir, attending national competitions in academic and technical programs and winning various scholastic arts awards.

The achievements are a “perspective of where you come from,” she said to the class.

“The only way to predict the future,” she said quoting American writer and philosopher Eric Hoffer, “is to have power to shape the future.”

Among those with the power included two salutatorians and seven valedictorians. Speeches from the respective students covered a range of subjects from the serious to the humorous, all of which portrayed a community of learning supported by friendship and encouragement.

“Your families are extremely proud of you,” joked valedictorian Aaron Rice. “Now is the most opportune time to ask for money.”

Laughter for bouncing beach balls, silly string and even a rogue mouse or two scampering around the infield grass gave way to the seriousness of being rewarded for hard work and perseverance as directors of the Stanwood-Camano School District handed over diplomas.

Senior class president Leah Hill led her fellow grads in tossing their caps skyward, marking the transition to a new stage in life.

Congratulations, class of 2010.
