Camano Country Club will celebrate Father’s Day Sun, June 20, with pancake breakfast cooked fresh by some of the dads. The public is welcome, service is 9 a.m. to noon. Breakfast includes coffee and orange juice with choices of all-you-caneat fresh grilled pancakes, eggs to order, ham or sausage; or corned beef hash, biscuit and eggs; all with live music. The Stanwood-Camano Area Foundation awards community grants to non-profit organizations that benefit the residents of Stanwood and Camano Island. Grants are now available and all applications are due to the foundation on or before July 15. Previous recipients include the Camano Animal Shelter (CASA), Josephine Sunset Home, and the Island County Sheriff’s Office. ‘ Support Our Troops Week’ is set

Merrill Gardens is hosting special events nationwide to help support our troops, and here in Stanwood, it will be Thurs, June 17, 4:30-6 p.m. The community is invited to attend a “fabulous” feast while the staff raises money to help our troops, and then, participate in swing dancing with the band DeLively. All proceeds benefit the USO.

Soap Box Derby is this Saturday

The Soap Box Derby Car is lit up on the smokestack and 61 drivers are ready to roll for the third annual Stanwood Camano Island Soap Box Derby June 19. Opening ceremonies begin at 8:45 a.m. and racing, 9 a.m., at 276th Street NW in front of the Stanwood Senior Center. Park in the high school parking lot. Winners travel to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the national race. For information, call the Community Resource Center, 629-5257.

‘One Ton of Ducks’ returns to pub

NAMI-Northsound, a support group for family and friends of the mentally ill, will not meet in June, July or August.

Master Gardener clinic this Saturday

Sat., June 19, there will be a Master Gardener clinic at Orchards Nursery, located at the west end city limits of Stanwood. Bring your gardening questions and/or samples of plants between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The clinic has WSU trained gardeners ready to help with gardening issues.

Camping programs still available

Camp Killoqua, south of Stanwood, offers swimming, boating, archery, the climbing wall, ropes courses, arts and crafts, plus specialty sessions in culinary, horses and more. Resident and day camp programs are available for boys and girls entering grades K-12. Sessions run June 28-Aug 27, with weekly fees depending on the program selected. Camp Killoqua, operated by Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council since 1941, offers year-round programming focused on youth.

Learn to play the piano at workshop

A free introductory session of “Simply Music,” learning to play the piano, will be Thurs, June 24, 7 p.m. at Cedarhome Christian School, 28505 68th Ave NW, Stanwood. A six-week summer workshop for adults and children is June 29 – Aug. 10, day and evening sessions, also now enrolling. Ciscoe to speak at Rose Festival

As part of Christianson Nursery’s annual Rose Festival Sat, June 19, the Tri-Valley Rose Society has its rose display in the schoolhouse with an invitation to amateurs and experts alike to submit roses to be judged in one of three categories: best in show, best fragrant rose, and best floral design incorporating perennials and roses. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.,with Ciscoe Morris speaking at 2:30 p.m. The rose display will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the plant clinic is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A garden tour will be conducted by John Christianson at 11:30 a.m., followed by light refreshments. Robyn Swesey will speak on easy-care roses at 1 p.m., and a rose ice cream social will be in the schoolhouse garden at 3:30. Winners of rose contest will be announced by Ciscoe and gift certificates will be awarded. Entries must be submitted by 9:30 a.m. that day. Call 466-3821 for more information.

Four different health screenings offered

Cholesterol, diabetes, bone density and blood pressure screenings will be held June 24, 8-9:30 a.m. at Skagit Valley Medical Center - Stanwood/Camano, 9631 269th Street NW, conference room A/B. Screenings are provided by Skagit Valley Hospital in cooperation with Dynacare Skagit Laboratories. There is a fee and no appointment is required. Vitamin D level screening is not recommended for patients on anticonvulsant medication. Fasting is not required. There is a cost, no appointment required. Host families sought for exchange student

Youth For Understanding (YFU) is currently seeking volunteer families to host international high school exchange students from over 60 countries this coming 2010-2011 school year. YFU is a non-profit international exchange program that also offers an American Overseas program for U.S high school students to study abroad for the summer, semester and year, offering over 300 scholarships annually. ‘Cookie and Cutters’ at Gerry Andal’s

Cookie Spirk of Camano Island will be performing with her new band, “Cookie and the Cutters,” for a special performance at Gerry Andal’s restaurant and lounge in Stanwood Fri, June 25. The five-piece band’s stage show includes danceable original country music and encompasses a mix of contemporary and classic country, blues and rock cover songs. ‘Dirt: the movie’ comes to Stanwood

The public is invited to a free screening of “Dirt: The Movie” at the Blackbird Bakery Café, 10007 270 Street NW in Stanwood Fri, June 25, 7 p.m.The multiple award winning film is sponsored by the cafe, Snow Goose Bookstore, and The Open Gate Farm. Art festival moves to fairgrounds
