Four SHS ninth graders win titles at Freshman Track Invite

PHOTO BY JOHN GALBREATH | STANWOOD/CAMANO NEWS A quartet of Stanwood High School freshmen – Emily Wayland, Megan Wyles, Jordin Stephenson and Alexander Bentz – claimed championships at the annual WesCo Freshman Invitational held at Goddard Stadium in Mukilteo recently.

Wayland took the crown in two different events, the shot put (30-11) and the discus (89-03). She competed in last weekend’s state track and field meet in the latter event as well.

Wyles won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 26 seconds and Stephenson took the 1600 in 5:30.

In the meantime, Alexander Bentz was the only local thinclad winner for the boys with a 53.9 clocking in the 400 meters.

Second places were earned by Savanna Woods in the 100-meter hurdles (17.3), the girls’ 4X400 relay team consisting of Rosella Bernocco, Alexandra Yerigan, Wyles and Stephenson (4:29) and Stephenson in the high jump with a leap of 4-04.

Thirds went to Tanner Nieman in the boys’ 3200 (10:39), Jacob Land in the high jump (5-04), Bentz in the 200 (24.5) and Yerigan in the 800 (2:29).

Taking fourth place were the 4X400 boys’ relay squadron of David Escobar, Kevin Escobar, Nieman and Bentz (3:57), Nieman in the 1600 (4:55) and Stephenson in the girls’ 400 (1:02).

Others who grabbed fifth through eighth places included Woods (5th, 300 hurdles, 53.4; 6th, HJ, 4-02), Yerigan (5th, 3200, 12:11), Wayland (5th, javelin, 76-06), William Metzger (6th, 300H, 48.2; 7th, 110H, 19.1), Nick Lewis (8th, shot put, 34-03), Bentz (7th, 100, 12.2) and D. Escobar (6th, HJ, 5-0).
