Cama Beach State Park is hosting the first World Ocean Day Festival Sat, June 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Along with educational displays, children enjoy activities and crafts such as artwork from recycled materials and miniature boat making at the Center for Wooden Boats. Bring a picnic to enjoy while listening to live music. Beach walks and nature walks will be provided by volunteer guides from WSU Beach Watchers. See a water rescue demonstration by Camano Fire Rescue. Explore the 65-foot educational vessel “Indigo” from Service, Education & Adventure (SEA) and hear guest speakers from WSU Beach Watchers, The Whale Museum, and diver Sandra Herrera, and view underwater videos by John F. Williams’ Still Hope Productions. Additional parking and activities at Camano Island State Park.

FOCIP plans two work parties

Friends of Camano Island Parks will pick up litter on Camano roads near the state parks Sat, June 5. Meet at the Elger Bay Store at 9:30 a.m. for an hour-and-a-half of work. Bring gloves and sturdy shoes. Another work party is planned for Tues, June 8, 9:30 a.m. Meet at Camano Island State Park ranger station. Bring lunch, beverage and dessert provided. Flames to have potluck picnic Thursday

The Mabana Flames will meet Thurs, June 3, 10 a.m., at the Mabana Fire Station. Guests are welcome to attend and learn about this auxiliary to the fire department. The winner of a drawing for a garden basket will be announced. The Flames thank all those who donated items to the raffle basket, as this is one of the auxiliary’s projects to raise funds for the support of volunteer firefighters. This month is a potluck picnic -- all members shnould bring something to share. Hostesses are Karen Gates, JoAnne Hall, Janet Mitchell, and Linda Yeast. The next meeting is in September.

Library board seeks student member

The Camano Island Library Advisory Board is accepting applications for its student position for the 2010-2011 school year. Comprised of year-round residents of Camano Island, the board meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the Camano Island Library Pilot Project at Terry’s Corner. Board members are required to attend all regularly scheduled meetings. Deadline for application is Fri, June 18 at 5 p.m. Students interested in serving can pick up an application at the library and submit it to David Menard, branch manager, Camano Island Library, 848 N. Camano Island nature program on fire

An expert from the Empire of Medieval Pursuits will demonstrate using flint to start fires the Middle Ages way Sat, June 5, in the nature program at Camano Island State Park amphitheater, starting at 7:30 p.m. Nature programs sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks and Washington State Parks are planned for Saturdays through the summer. Build your own rain barrel

Learn how to harvest the rain to provide plants with naturally soft water, Wed, June 16, 7 p.m., at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 East Camano Drive. Scott Chase, coordinator of the Shore Stewards program in Island County, will demonstrate how to build a rain barrel at a fraction of the cost of buying one. His demonstration includes where to get materials, and how this protects habitat and conserves our most valuable resource. This presentation is part of a public education series hosted the third Wednesday of the month by the Camano Wildlife Habitat Project, sponsored by Friends of Camano Island Parks as part of the Island County watershed project. Youth invited to sign up for camp

Camano Chapel summer youth camps includes junior camp for 4th to 8th-graders July 14-18 and camp for students going into 6th -9th grade is Aug 9-14. Both camps will be at Moran State Park on Orcas Island, and scholarships are available. Registration forms at www.eyp7.org. Private computer training classes set

One-on-one private computer training classes are available during spring and summer at the Camano Senior and Community Center. Topics include but are not limited to Windows 7, MS Office 2007, Intro to computers, digital cameras, eBay, e-mail and Facebook. Call 387-0222 for information.

Residents invited to give input

Island County and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust are working together to create the county’s Parks & Habitat Conservation Plan to provide directions and goals for the management of parks, recreation facilities, habitat areas, and natural resource areas in Island County. To make the plan successful, Island County Parks would like to hear from as many people as possible. From May 17 through June 14, anyone ages 10 and over is invited to complete an online questionnaire. A link is provided on the Island County Parks home page at www.islandcounty.net/publicworks/parks. It takes about 10 minutes to answer the questions.

Beeson to speak for women’s club

Camano Country Club’s Women’s Club will hold its monthly 10 a.m. meeting, luncheon and program June 14, with guest speaker Ed Beeson, owner of the new Blackbird Bakery and Cafe. He will be talking about his background in the industry, and will also be catering this event. Luncheon by reservation only. Ladies bridge follows at 12:30 p.m..

County seeks applicant for one position

Island County Board of Commissioners seeks applicants to fill one alternate position on the Board of Equalization, which renders decisions on taxpayer petitions for property tax equalization. Concert features Scandinavian music

Sun, June 6 at 4 p.m., Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Stanwood will host a violin/organ concert of Scandinavian music. Svend Ronning, a Stanwood graduate and now professor of violin at PLU, as well as concert master of the Tacoma Symphony, and David Dahl, University Organist Emeritus of PLU, will perform works of several Scandinavian composers. Dahl’s own compositions will be featured. Admission is by freewill offering. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall after the concert.

T wo earthquake programs for citizens

Bartell Drugs launches food drive

“Stock the Pantry” food drive at Bartell Drugs begins today, June 1, helping to feed out-of-school children and families throughout the community. Bartell Drugs in Stanwood, as well as all 57 store locations, will be accepting nonperishable food items and cash donations until June 13. This two-week food drive, now in its second year, helps to replenish food stocks during summer months—when families that normally depend on free or reducedprice school meals may struggle to provide those meals at home.
