Salary
Superintendent’s salary is too high
Dear Editor:
Last week while reading the paper, I noticed the figures comparing the number of students in a district to what the superintendent of the district makes annually.
I was shocked to see that the superintendent of the Stanwood Camano School District made $202,115 a year, compared to the governor who makes $166,891 a year and to Randy Dorn, the state superintendent, who makes $121,618.
Her salary just doesn’t make sense.
If that does not surprise you enough look at it this way, the Everett school superintendent makes $194,030 annually. There are 18,967 students in the Everett School District compared with 5,342 in the Stanwood/ Camano district.
Mrs. Shumate is making $37.84 per child in her district, while the Everett superintendent is making a mere $10.22 per kid. In fact she makes more per child than almost all other superintendents. This, to me, is appalling and disgusting.
At a time when the district is cutting things left and right, I propose that Mrs. Shumate cut her own salary.
I am not naïve to think that cutting her salary will solve all of our problems, but it just might show us that she cares.
