Pornography
Please filter all library computers
Dear Editor:
I am responding to your article regarding Sno-Isle Libraries’ Internet pornography policy. In it you mentioned that the Sno-Isle Internet use policy requires filtering for those 17 and younger.
You also quoted a library official saying, “We support libraries listening to their patrons.”
Here is my experience with Internet viewing stations at Sno-Isle Libraries in Stanwood.
Even though the Internet viewing stations are designed to limit the viewing to the person on the computer, I have walked by computers on several occasions at which time I was exposed to internet pornography. To make matters worse, it appeared that the viewer was under 18.
Because of these experiences, I have determined that the library is not a safe place for my kids. As a result, I have greatly limited the time that they or I spend there. We are saddened by this necessity, as the library for me as a child was always a wonderful place to learn and explore.
My family and I will be very grateful if the Sno-Isle Libraries will provide a safe environment by changing the policy to establish Internet filtering on all computers. Not only is it appropriate for our community, but also within the legal boundaries.
While I recognize there are times that filters may block legitimate sites, it seems a small sacrifice for the safety of our families.
