EARLY HISTORY

May 17, 1900, Norwegian settlers marched down Market Street in Stanwood, now 102nd Avenue, in celebration of Norwegian Independence Day. Lena Dimick, pioneer Stanwood resident born in Minnesota, came to Stanwood in 1888. Henry Clay Ross of Warm Beach contributed much to the early development of this area after he arrived in 1900.

100 YEARS AGO (1910)

Edward Husby, mail carrier, got $67.50 a month, out of which he had to provide feed for three horses for the buggy. Steiner H. Fjarlie was born in Norway in 1870, migrated to America, and married his wife Hjordis in Silvana in 1910.

90 YEARS AGO (1920)

J.H. Campbell was the bookkeeper at the Carnation Milk Products Co. plant in East Stanwood (now North Star Fish Co.)

80 YEARS AGO (1930)

East Stanwood Mercantile Co. and Cedarhome Mercantile Co. consolidated. The Dairyland Cheese Co. at East Stanwood turned out over 500 pounds of cheese a day. The Milltown School closed the year with

picnic.

70 YEARS AGO (1940)

Paul Holman and Gordon Lien of Stanwood, crew members on the S.S. North Star, arrived back from a historic voyage to Antarctic as supply ship for Rear Admiral Byrd’s expedition. The Stanwood Pirates scored a lop-sided victory over Darrington, 21-6.

60 YEARS AGO (1950)

Palace Market owners Carl and Inga Bangs celebrated 30 years in business in Stanwood. Silvana Grange No. 847 won first place in the state grange talent contest.

50 YEARS AGO (1960)

Gavels made of yew and manufactured on Camano found their way to many national dignitaries. Twin City first graders planted saplings at the district’s Camano Island tree farm – each had an attached aluminum nameplate to identify its planter.

40 YEARS AGO (1970)

Camano law enforcement officers could talk by radio to Stanwood officers direct instead of routing calls through Coupeville. Sears Roebuck Foundation donated $600 to Stanwood FFA for livestock; the chapter had a flock of 12 ewes and two rams.

30 YEARS AGO (1980)

Dawn Robinson was Stanwood’s first woman firefighter. John Dean was the new manager of the Stanwood-Camano Fair.

20 YEARS AGO (1990)

Chrysalis Enterprises, a new business venture, employed developmentally disabled adults to make and bake bread, cookies, muffins, etc. Brockways World Class Limousine Service was new on Camano. Warm Beach Firebells gave $3,500 to the fire department to buy an Amkus rescue tool. Bob Larsen was new city planner. Cedarhome Baptist Church celebrated its 100th birthday.

10 YEARS AGO (2000)

Steve Epperson stepped into Jerry Nickels’ shoes as one of three Fire Protection Dist. 14 commissioners, and also inherited Nickel’s seat on the board of the ambulance consortium. Krissy Kaufman, 17, was the youngest Stillaguamish Grange Master ever installed. Camano Chamber of Commerce dedicated its new Visitor Center and Art Park at Terry’s Corner. SHS FFA team placed eighth in the state Natural Resource contest. SHS soccer team graduated to their first league championship in 11 years. Burn barrels became illegal.
