Wear a poppy with pride

American Legion Auxiliary Junior Poppy Girl Lauren Lund asks the public to accept and wear a poppy with pride this Memorial weekend. Poppies are handmade by veterans in hospitals and are being sold at Haggens and QFC grocery stores. Lauren comes from a large family of veterans and legion members, and has been a member for 12 years. Mark calendars for June blood drive

Employees of the Stanwood School District transportation fleet are sponsoring a blood drive Tues, June 15, at the transportation center (bus garage), 9101 272 St. NW, noon to 6 p.m., and everyone in the community is encouraged to attend and give blood to the Puget Sound Blood Center.

Community potluck and dance

All ages are welcome to a fundraiser for Port Susan Middle School Fri, June 4, 6 to 10 p.m., in the gym. Bring a potluck dish and receive a chance to win free dance lessons. Following dinner, a beginner West Coast swing lesson begins at 6:30 p.m., and at 7:30 there will be a demonstration before the dancing begins. Along with raising funds, the purpose of the event is to promote a community of social dancing. For information, call 360-474-7386.

‘I love a piano’ musical by I. Berlin

Advanced placement info for students

All high school students and parents are invited to an Advanced Placement information night at Stanwood High School in the main campus library, Thurs, May 27, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Through the AP college-level courses and exams, students can earn college credit and advanced placement. Some AP teachers will be present to answer questions. For information call the school, 629-1300.

Quilters group meets at Methodist church

The evening group of Camano Island Quilters will meet Thurs, June 3, 6:30 p.m. at the Stanwood United Methodist Church, 102 Drive/271 NW in west Stanwood. Anyone interested in quilting is invited to come join the group. The morning group will not meet during the summer. Their last meeting is June 2 at Odd Fellows Lodge on Camano Island.

Master gardener clinic Saturday

Master gardeners will be at Orchards Nursery, at the west end city limits of Stanwood, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sat, May 29 to answer your gardening questions. Bring samples of sick plants.

Christian school announces concerts

Mount Vernon Christian School presents several upcoming spring music concerts. The elementary concert is Thurs, May 27, 7 p.m. in the gym. The middle school concert is Tues, June 1, 7 p.m. in the high school’s Hamming Commons, 820 W. Blackburn, Mount Vernon. Questions, call 360-424-9157.

Stress management class at library

Energy balancing for stress management will be taught by Cathy Wooten Wed, June 2, 6 p.m. at the Stanwood Library. Learn quick and easy techniques that balance energies and help your body recover from the impact of stress. No special equipment needed; just wear comfortable clothes and bring drinking water. Wooten is a licensed massage practitioner and safety and health specialist. Funded by the Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library, registration is not required. ASSIST holds Church Creek graduation

ASSIST (Active Student Support for Independence, Skills, and Transition) will hold its graduation ceremony Thurs., June 3, 6 p.m. in the Church Creek gym at Stanwood High School.

Swim team summer program offered

Although the Team Fitness pool is closed, the Steelhead Swim Team will again offer a summer league at alternate pools in the area. Tryouts will be Fri, May 28, June 4 and 11 at the Camano Country Club pool, 5:30-6 p.m. Swimmers must be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle (crawl stroke), 25 yards of backstroke, and 25 yards breaststroke. Plant, yard sale to benefit critters

There will be a Humane Society plant and yard sale Sat, May 29, and Sun, May 30, at 6326 Lakewood Road, Stanwood. Saturday’s hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday’s hours are noon to 4 p.m. Donations are welcome, call 360-652-5844. Workshops offer gardening tips

Two workshops, on surviving slugs without poisons, and on hummingbird and butterfly gardens, will be held Wed, May 26, 6 and 7 p.m. at Wild Song Nursery, 21313 36th Ave. NW, Stanwood. Auditions for ‘Off the Map’ in June

A slide program of over 50 photographs of the barns of Camano Island and surrounding areas will be shown Thurs, May 27, 7 p.m. at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center at 27108 102nd Ave. NW in west Stanwood.

New support for children of cancer

CLIMB (Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery) is a new free support group designed for children whose parent or guardian is diagnosed with cancer. This program at Skagit Valley Hospital is helpful in normalizing feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and anger in children by enhancing his/her ability to cope with stress associated with the parent’s illness. The weekly meetings will help the child to understand and express feelings about the parent’s cancer, help them to cope with and communicate feelings. Dinner will be provided for participants. The group will be co-facilitated by Amber Ford, MSW, oncology social worker, and Alisha Eastman, MSW intern. ‘Annie’ coming to McIntyre Hall

META Performing Arts presents “Annie,” June 4-13, at McIntyre Hall, Mount Vernon. Reserve tickets are available online at mcintyrehall. org, or by calling the box office, 360-416-7727. A special pay-what-you-can show is scheduled for Saturday, June 5, at 2 p.m. This show is festival seating only, with doors opening at 1 p.m. “Annie” is the story of an 11-year-old girl making her way from a Depression Era orphanage to the mansion of millionaire Daddy Warbucks.

Life jacket loaners begin this weekend

In a program for preventing drownings, North County Fire/EMS and Snohomish County Safe Kids Coalition provides the funds to make it possible for Kayak Point County Park to loan out life jackets free of charge this summer. The loaner life jacket cabinet located at the park boat ramp will be open for the summer season beginning this Friday, May 28. Life jackets for children as well as adults will be available for daily checkout through Labor Day weekend. Even with life jackets, parents still need to keep a close watch on their children. Life jacket use is recommended for children 5 and under on beaches, docks, in boats, rafts or inner tubes, and deep or swift water, and for children ages 6-11 who are on docks, boats, rafts, inner tubes and riverbanks. Teens and adults should also use life jackets while on boats, rafts or inner tubes. The water rescue team of North County Fire/EMS reminds everyone that if someone appears to be in distress or things don’t look right, please do not hesitate to call 911. Remember that every second counts.
