Fastpitch team views for district title this week

By JOHN GALBREATH Sports Editor

Snohomish’s Panthers didn’t stand much of a chance, it turned out, as they were baffled by Stanwood’s Brittany Jeans’ pitching and Sammy Bingham’s hitting in last week’s regular season finale here on the home turf.

The end result of all the perplexity was a sound 5-1 Lady Spartan softball victory. The win assured the local lasses of a second-place finish in the Western Conference 4A North Division with a 12-3 regular-season record.

Undefeated Marysville- Pilchuck (16-0) topped the league and will be the WesCo North’s No. 1 representative in this week’s district tournament. The Sparts will be the No. 2 seed, while Arlington and Monroe are numbers 3 and 4 seeds.

The tourney begins today, Tuesday, May 18, at Monroe’s Sky River Park.

Stanwood’s girls will play Shorewood, the South’s No. 3 club, in a 3 p.m. game. Another contest will follow the first in the double-elimination tournament.

The remainder of the district contests will take place this coming Thursday, May 20, beginning at 3 p.m.

In the season’s final contest against the Panthers, Jeans struck out 12 Panthers while allowing just three singles and a walk.

Bingham supplied all the power her team would need as she blasted a home run and a double that accumulated three runs-batted-in.
