On The Island

The Lady Washington and the Hawaiian Chieftain, replica sailing ships, will be visiting Cama Beach State Park for one day only, Mon, May 24, and putting on a display of a sea battle right off the waterfront, about 4 p.m. Camano Sail and Power’s charter sloop (camanosail@camano.net) and various privately owned sailboats will be on hand to observe from the water. The three-hour event features booming cannons, close-quarters maneuvers, and a taste of 18th century maritime life aboard tall ships. A ticket is required for all passengers, including babes in arms. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Guests will be transported to and from the ships via longboat and will climb a Jacob’s ladder to reach the deck. Island County Public Works’ Surface Water Management Division hosts a public meeting for the Country Club neighborhood Thurs, May 27, 7:15-9 p.m. to talk about the Beach Drive culvert replacement and road re-opening. County seeks applicants for positions

Ham radio operators meeting scheduled

Ham radio operators will meet Thurs, May 20, 7 p.m. at the Madrona Fire Station, 916 West 5th Street, on the northwest side of Camano Island. Public is welcome.

Republican women host candidates

Camano Island Republican Women invite the public to the Tues, May 25, noon meeting and luncheon at Lost Lake Club House, 1469 Lake Drive, Camano Island. Speakers are John Koster, Republican candidate for US Congress, and Kelly Emerson, Republican candidate for Island County commissioner.

Fire and rescue commissioners meet

Camano Island Fire and Rescue’s fire commissioners meeting is Mon, May 24, 7:30 p.m. at the Madrona Fire Station, 916 W. 5th Street, Camano Island. Any questions, call the administration office, 387-1512.

Third Friday of the month dance

South Camano Grange hosts the third Friday of the month dance with a mix of swing, ballroom, Latin and country, including east coast swing, west coast swing, waltz, foxtrot, nightclub 2 step, rumba, cha cha, country two step, cowboy cha cha and the electric slide. Beginning east coast swing lesson starts at 7:30 p.m. (free with paid admission to the dance); followed by general dancing, 8:15-10:30 p.m. No partner necessary; address is 2227 S. Riders can help to save Trillium property

A guided trail ride on the Trillium property at the M Bar C Ranch, 5264 Shore Meadow Road near Freeland, is Sun, May 23. If you don’t have a horse, mountain bikers and hikers are also invited, followed by a ranch-style lunch and a presentation by representatives of the Whidbey Camano Land Trust. CASA, community flea market is set

The May 29 CASA flea market will benefit the Camano Animal Shelter Association at the Camano Center 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 141 East Camano Road south of the shopping center. Jamba juice and hot dogs will be available 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., and the animal shelter will be open for visiting 11 to 4 p.m.

Salmon barbecue coming in June

The salmon barbecue Sat, June 5, 4-7 pm., will be at the Camano Senior and Community Center, 606 Arrowhead Road; phone is 387-0222. Menu: wild-caught salmon, rice pilaf, cole slaw, rolls and rhubarb crisp. Tickets available at the center and sponsored by Angel of the Winds Casino.

View underwater wilderness video

The public is invited to join filmmaker John F. Williams Wed, May 26, 7 p.m., for a video tour and discussion of local underwater wilderness, at the Camano Multipurpose Center (blue building) 141 N. East Camano Drive. Excerpts from “Sea-Inside: Pacific Northwest,” will be shown, which brings Puget Sound undersea habitat and its biology to the surface. Screenings available at health clinic

Three screenings will be available at the Camano Community Health Clinic Thurs, May 27, 7:30 - 9 a.m., 127 N. East Camano Drive. Vitamin D level screening is not recommended for patients on anticonvulsant medication. Fasting is not required. There is a cost. No appointment required, and results are mailed to the home. Bone density screening is a non-invasive, painless scan of one hand, for osteoporosis (low bone density) risk. Results are available immediately. Fee, (cash or check payable to Skagit Valley Hospital). No appointment is required. Grand opening and farmers market

Grand opening for Suzie’s Place Greek Bistro & Bakery is at Brindles Marketplace Sat, May 22, 5-9 p.m. Door prizes, leg of lamb dinner and entertainment.
