Relay for Life begins 6 p.m. Friday, May 21, at the Stanwood High School stadium with guest speaker Tim Pearce and the American Legion Post 92 Color Guard. The survivor lap begins at 6:30 p.m. along with hula by Ha ‘Aheo Ana Me Ke Aloha. At 6:45-7:45, Selena Tibert provides music, followed Zazzo from 8-9 p.m. and then magic by Aaron Wheeler from 9-9:45 p.m. Walk the Luminaria from 10-11 p.m. followed by music with Steve Raible and the Newscasters from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. At 6 a.m. Saturday morning, sunrise yoga will be led by Georgina Shaffer, then Zumba with Juanita Kolbeck runs from 7-8 a.m., followed by Cal Finnesand’s music. A community event to introduce a training kit for adults who work with or interact with teens, “In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence,” is Mon, May 24, 1 p.m., at Terry’s Corner Fire Station, 525 E. N. Camano Drive. Based on the perspective of teens, the training kit’s release is scheduled on the six-year anniversary of Dayna Fure’s death in 2004. She was murdered by her ex-boyfriend. Her family has funded this project to do something positive with their grief and for Dayna’s legacy to live on. Community leaders, including Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick, Melody Hafner, mother of Dayna Fure, Christine Gruver, principal of Stanwood High School, Nan Stoops, executive director of Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Vicci Hilty, deputy director of Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County will talk about their experience and plans for the future. Training, however, will not be conducted at the Monday event.

Contribute to parks, conservation plan

Island County and the Whidbey Camano Land Trust are working together to create the County’s Parks & Habitat Conservation Plan to provide directions and goals for the man-agement of parks, recreation facilities, habitat areas, and natural resource areas in Island County. To make the plan successful, County Parks would like to hear from as many residents as possible. Camano residents can express themselves at Camano Plaza, Friday, May 21, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at 370 NE Camano Drive, in front of the market. A focus group meeting for people who have special interest in County parks and habitat areas, including nearby residents, environmental groups and park users are invited to have their say 2-3:30 p.m. Friday, May 2. From May 17 through June 14, anyone ages 10 and over is invited to complete an online questionnaire, at www. islandcounty.net/publicworks/parks, which takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Rep. Bailey hosts ‘coffee talks’

Rep. Barbara Bailey will hold six “coffee talks” throughout the 10th District May 26 and 27, and she will be at Scandia Coffeehouse, 9808 SR 532, in Stanwood 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wed, May 26 to reach out to constituents and get their views on issues. “Discussing issues over a cup of coffee is an American tradition,” said Bailey, R-Oak Harbor. Master gardener clinic this Saturday

A Master Gardener clinic will be at Orchards Nursery, at the west end city limits of Stanwood Sat, May 22. Bring your gardening questions and/or samples of plants from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Historic barns of Camano, Stanwood

A slide program of more than 50 photographs of the barns of Camano Island and surrounding areas will be shown at the Floyd Norgaard Cultural Center at 27108 102nd Ave NW in west Stanwood, Thurs, May 27, 7 p.m. The photographer, Gerald Magelssen grew up on a Camano farm and worked in many of the barns. The show includes the barn at Birch Meadow Farm on Norman Road, owned by Annabelle and Grace Birkestol. It was built in 1886, it is on the Washington State Heritage Barn Register and was named a Snohomish County Centennial Farm in 2007.

‘Voices of Peace’ at Freeborn church

“Voices of Peace” is a nine-member worship team that will lead in contemporary music and traditional hymns at Freeborn Lutheran Church Sun., May 23, 10 a.m. The group includes vocal, piano and guitar. Day of Recollection scheduled

A Day of Recollection at the Carmelite Institute of Spirituality in Stanwood is set for Sat, May 22, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Topic is Saint Ignatius of Loyola, with presenter Fr. Ramiro Casale OCD. School board announces meeting

The Stanwood-Camano School District Board of Directors will meet Tues, May 18, in the administration and resource center boardroom, 26920 Pioneer Highway, Stanwood, 7 p.m. A study session on levy information precedes the meeting at 6:15 p.m.

Musicians perform at Leatherheads Pub

Gardening workshops in two sessions

Summer containers’ demonstration

Children invited to special book event

Book-a-palooza Bash is a special after-hours event with a puppet show, stories and songs Fri, May 21, 7-8 p.m. at the Stanwood Library. Each child in attendance will receive their very own picture book courtesy of The Foundation for Early Learning. “And a party would not be complete without a special treat,” said Joy Feldman, children’s librarian. Cancer prevention study open to all

Community members are invited to enroll in the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention Study 3 during the Relay for Life 5-9 p.m. Fri, May 21, at Stanwood High School Stadium. Eligible participants must be age 30-65, never had cancer before (except basal or squamous cell skin cancer) and be willing to commit to a longterm study which involves filling out a survey every other year. To register, go to the tent at the east end of the stadium track to do the paperwork, get a quick waist measurement and give a very small blood sample. The first survey will be in the mail soon.

Veterans association sets ship reunions

Navy and Marine Corps shipmates who served on the USS Columbus 1944 through 1976, and the USS Columbus (SSN-762) past and present, are asked to share memories with old friends by e-mailing hope439@verizon.net. Learn about the importance of a will

The public is invited to a free community event May 27, to learn about the importance of having a will. Speakers will be Bill Zingarelli, local attorney at law, and Becky Bunke, fund development director of Josephine, who will speak on ethical wills, sometimes called a “love letter to your family.” The Thursday event, 10-11:30 a.m., is in the Josephine Multi-Purpose Room, 9901 272nd Place NW, Stanwood. V olunteers to assist vulnerable adults

The Snohomish County Long Term Care Ombudsman Program will offer a four-day training session June 22, 24, 29 and 30, for new volunteer ombudsmen to help vulnerable adults living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family homes in Snohomish County. Once certified, volunteers are asked to spend an average of four hours a week as ombudsman. Mileage is reimbursable. The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), sponsored by Catholic Community Services, seeks volunteers for various jobs in the community.
