SKYLAR DEFFINBAUGH and ASHAYA HENDERSON, both of Stanwood, made the Dean’s List for winter quarter, 2010 at Eastern Washington University in Cheney.

ANNALIESE FRYE, a junior majoring in social work, collaborated on a poster with Hannah Reinders from Huron, S.D. for a presentation to the Siouxland Research Conference in Orange City, Iowa recently. Twenty-two Northwestern College students gave presentations at the conference hosted by Northwestern last month. Annaliese, who is from Camano Island, and Hannah entitled their poster, Voices “One Caseworker—Effective Foster Care.”

This year AARP Tax- Aide assisted income tax returns resulted in over $4 million in tax refunds returned to the local economy of Snohomish and Island counties. There are over 125 volunteers serving at 18 sites in Snohomish and Island counties, who assisted in the preparation of over 4,000 income tax returns during this past tax season. These dedicated volunteers gave of their own time to learn the latest in tax regulations. They staffed tax assistance sites at senior centers, public libraries and

at Everett Community College, helping their neighbors Voices of Hope understand the complexities of income tax. Volunteers are the key to Tax-Aide’s success, the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service, with special attention to those age 60 and older. AARP Tax-Aide helps low- and moderateincome taxpayers file their personal income tax returns. The program started in 1968 when four volunteers helped older taxpayers complete their tax returns. This was one of AARP’s early efforts to use volunteers to ensure that important services were available to older people. Since 1980, the program has operated under a cooperative

agreement with the Internal Revenue Service. Hope
