Spartan netters upset by Eagles but remain league leaders

PHOTO BY JOHN GALBREATH The girls’ tennis team lost their first match of the season to Arlington but defeated two other conference rivals to remain atop the WesCo 4A North with a 6-1 record.

In the last of the squad’s three matches last week, the upstart Eagles from Arlington upset the local net contingent 4-3.

The Sparts’ No. 1 singles player, Megan Lalone, continued her dominance with another 6-0, 6-0 blanking of her opponent.

Marina Messerli, playing No. 3 singles, took her match rather easily as well, winning 6-2, 6-1.

The only doubles victory was earned by Elle Shaughnessy and Heather Smith as they defeated their Eagle opposites in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 at No. 3.

Earlier in the week, on Monday, a trio of wins came in singles play. Messerli (No. 2, 6-1, 6-1), Heather Baxter (No. 3, 6-1, 6- 1) and Reanne Lee (No. 4, 6-0, 6-0) came through for the Lady Spartans against Monroe.

The 5-2 triumph was assured with doubles victories by Kallen Shaughnessy/ Amme Verbarendse (No. 1, 6-4, 6-3) and Helen Reinecke/ Elle Shaughnessy (No. 3, 6-2, 7-6).

Playing the second of three matches on Wednesday, the Spartans once again took three of the four singles matches and two of the three doubles confrontations to win 5-2 over Lake Stevens.

Messerli (6-3, 6-3), Baxter (6-2, 7-5) and Lee (6-2, 6-2) all proved victorious in singles play while the teams of Shaughnessy/ Verbarendse (7-5, 6-3) and Shaughnessy/ Smith (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) took care of business in doubles.
