The Lady Spartan track and field squad (82 points) upended Marysville-Pilchuck (77) and Monroe (30) in a conference tri-meet last Thursday afternoon.
Utilizing the point-scoring dominance of their long distance runners and the emerging depth of their throwing aggregation, the Sparts built up a solid point base that remained out of reach for the other two teams.
Madison Davis, Natasha Verma, Minna Fields and Jordin Stephenson won the 400- through 3200-meter runs, seemingly with only their teammates pushing them on to victory.
Meanwhile, double wins by Emily Wayland in the shot put (33-03) and discus (105-01) combined well with multiple high placings by other Spartans in most of the other field events to assure a Stanwood girls’ triumph by the end of the day.
“Madison Davis had alltime personal records in the 400 and 3200, which was cool since her dad is the head coach for M-P,” noted Spartan head coach Jordan Sneva. “Freshmen sensations Megan Wyles, Alexandra Yerigan and Emily Wayland also racked up PR’s for the year,” he concluded.
Davis’s time in the 400 was 1:03, whereas her 2- mile time was 11:49, just two seconds off the winning pace of fellow Lady Spartan Jordin Stephenson (11:47).
Verma won the 800 in 2:26 and finished second to Fields’ 5:11 winning time with a clocking of 5 minutes, 20 seconds.
Besides Stephenson’s victory in the 3200, she grabbed second in the 400 with a 1:04 mark.
Other long-distance placings by local harriers included Wyles’ 2:31 in the 800 (third), Yerigan’s 5:45 third place in the 1600 and Kelsey Haller’s fourth in the 800 (2:34) and the 1600 (5:50).
Another win was earned by the girls’ 4X400 relay quartet, Natalie Bergstrom, Corinne Teichgrab, Verma and Fields with a mark of 4:14.
Second places went to Kyla McGovern in the discus (79-07), Kalina Eveland in the shot put (33-00), the 4X200 relay squad of Mc- Call Holm, Emily Land, Brenda Bingham and Bergstrom (2:01), the 4X100 foursome of Riley Henderson, Savanna Woods, Grace Sheridan and Eveland (54.8) and Teichgrab in the long jump with a leap of 14-04 and in the 100 meters with a mark of 13.4 seconds.
Third places were secured by the 4X400 relay team of Brynna Bodle, Yerigan, Wyles and Stephenson (4:30), Rachelle Dowrey in the javelin (84-00) and the shot put (29-10), Sheridan in the high jump (4-8), Bergstrom in the long jump (14-00) and the 300 hurdles (52.3) and Woods in the 100 hurdles (17.9).
Taking fourth were Holm (HJ, 4-06), Land (LJ, 14- 00), Sheridan (100, 13.8) and Bingham (300H, 52.7).
