Icarus Triumphant
Jack Archibald’s latest stained-glass installation, a 45-foot-10-foot mural named Icarus Triumphant, was placed in Portland, Ore. new low-income James Hawthorne Apartments with the help of Bob Ansell. “These folks were basically living on the street until now,” said Archibald. “I wanted to create an artwork for their lobby that would be uplifting not only in the metaphorical sense, but in a literal sense as well. I titled it “Icarus Triu mphant” because I never liked that myth about the kid who tried to fly to the sun and melted the wax that held his wings on, and fell to his death. So this time, I made him triumphant.” The piece can be seen at James Hawthorne Apartments near the entrance of Interstate 26 and Portland State University.
