Stanwood’s boys might have taken second in a nonleague track meet on Thursday, but they recovered sufficiently to tie Curtis High for the co-championship of the 19-team Birger Solberg Team Invitational over the weekend.
Victories by Aaron Wiganosky, Robert Hanke and Kale Schmidt helped the Sparts garner 67 points, but that was less that the Shorecrest total of 89. Edmonds Woodway managed 25 points to finish third.
Wiganosky cleared 12 feet, 5 inches in the pole vault event, Hanke raced over 300 meters’ worth of hurdles in 41.5 seconds while Schmidt had the best long jump with a 21-05 leap.
Freshman Alexander Bentz had a fine day on the track, taking second in the 400 (56.6) and fourth in the 100 (12.0) before joining Ben Ulrich, Justin Midcap and Hanke in placing second in the 4X400 relay (3:45).
A plethora of seconds were earned by Joe Eidsness in the javelin (135-04), Alex Hatley in the shot put (48- 08) and discus (123-02), Travis Stone (pole vault, 11-00), Wade Weinert in the 3200 (10:24), Hanke in the 110 hurdles (15.3), the 4X100 relay squad of Andrew Downing, Schmidt, Eidsness and Hanke (46.2) and Ulrich in the 300 low hurdles (43.9).
Taking third were Adam Knott (400, 57.3), Cody Howard (1600, 5:04), Aaron Sandquist (3200, 10:58), Michael Randall (shot put, 38-07.5), Trevor Fekkes (javelin, 130-07), Joe Spohn (triple jump, 38-01) and Schmidt (high jump, 6-02).
Fourth-place ribbons went to Tanner Nieman (1600, 5:09), Mitchel Chitwood (800, 2:17), David Escobar (400, 58.3), Randall (discus, 110-01), Eidsness (300 hurdles, 44.6), Schmidt (110 hurdles, 16.09) and Fekkes (high jump, 5-10).
Seven different Spartans placed in the top four during the Solberg Invitational on Saturday.
Schmidt and Hanke earned titles. The former won the 400-meter run in a time of 51.3 seconds while the latter took the 300 hurdles with a mark of 41.5 seconds.
Schmidt, a senior who will join the University of Washington track team next year, also grabbed second places in the high jump (6- 02) and the long jump (21- 06).
Thirds went to Alex Hatley in the shot put (49-04), the 4X400 relay squadron of Ben Ulrich, Alexander Bentz, Hanke and Schmidt (3:34), Ulrich in the 300 hurdles (42.4), Hanke in the 110 hurdles (15.6) while Trevor Fekkes (high jump, 5-08) and Aaron Wiganosky (pole vault, 12-00) finished fourth in their respective events.
Stanwood’s 84 cumulative points tied them with Curtis for the invitational championship. Nineteen schools participated in the event, which was held at the Civic Field Athletic Complex in Bellingham.
Head coach Jordan Sneva expressed special thanks to Spartan runners Kyle Mc- Coy (23rd, 8:58), Wade Wienert (6th, 6:54) and Cody Hoskins (15th, 7:43) for stepping up and running the steeplechase, a race rarely run in Washington state high school meets.
