Utilizing depth in the distance races and the continued fine showing by Kaci Jones in the throws, the Stanwood girls finished second at the Arnie Young Track and Field Invitational at Renton Memorial Stadium over the weekend.
By accumulating 100.5 team points, they just missed the championship trophy, which went to Mt. Si with 102 points.
Senior Natasha Verma won the 800 meters with a clocking of 2:24 and Minna Fields came through as expected by winning the 3200 in 11 minutes, 29 seconds, but it was the high finishes of Madison Davis, Corinne Teichgrab, the distance medley quartet of Jordin Stephenson, Kelsey Haller, Verma and Davis and the 4X400 relay squad that collected a plethora of points during the meet for the Lady Spartans.
“Natasha did a great job winning the 800 and Minna ran a grand 3200 time,” said head coach Jordan Sneva.
Adding significantly to that total were the two victories and a second posted by Jones. The sophomore field specialist won the shot put (36-01) and the javelin (118-09) before finishing second in the discus (109-03).
“Kaci earned Field Athlete of the Meet,” Sneva noted.
Running as a distance medley team, Stephenson (1200 meters), Davis (400), Haller (800) and Verma (1600) beat every other foursome with a combined clocking of 13:17, which was nearly 52 seconds better than their closest rival.
Hailey Storbeck, Davis, Teichgrab and Verma grabbed third in the 4X400 relay with a time of 4:19.
Placing third individually for the Sparts were Teichgrab with a time of 1:03 in the 400, Davis in the 800 with a mark of 2:31 and Fields in the 1600 (5:19).
