Distance runners, Jones place second at Young Invite
Utilizing depth in the distance races and the continued fine showing by Kaci Jones in the throws, the Stanwood girls finished second at the Arnie Young Track and Field Invitational at Renton Memorial Stadium over the weekend.
By accumulating 100.5 team points, they just missed the championship trophy, which went to Mt. Si with 102 points. Full Story

The Spartan booters (3- 2-2) split their two spring break matches with a narrow loss to Lake Stevens and a lopsided victory over the Arlington Eagles.
Still among the top four teams in the league, the Sparts lost a 1-0 shutout to the Vikings after Vasily Bogdanoff scored in the fourth minute for the visiting Vikings. Full Story
Robert Hanke leads Spartan tracksters to second place at Young Invite
A pair of hurdles victories for Robert Hanke, another long jump win for Kale Schmidt and several other high placings for Alex Hatley, Trevor Fekkes and Schmidt assured the Spartan boys’ track and field team a second-place finish (87.5 points) behind Auburn-Riverside (104) at Saturday’s Arnie Young Invitational at Renton Memorial Stadium. Schmidt plays in All-State hoops game
Stanwood High School’s Kale Schmidt participated in the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association All- State Game at Mountlake Terrace High School recently.
The senior guard started for the 4A team and scored 14 points, third highest total for his team. The Class 3A team beat the 4A club 121-111. Full Story

Gerdes leads Spartan nine to two diamond victories over Everett
David Gerdes had a career two-game series for the Stanwood Spartans (2- 2 in league, 3-2 overall) as they emerged with a pair of baseball wins over Western Conference North leaguemate Everett.
The first, a narrow 4-3 victory over the Seagulls, featured Gerdes’ 2-for-2 effort with two runs-battedin and Garret Thomas’ two RBI as well. Full Story
Kloke earns place on the all WAC women’s basketball team
A 2007 Stanwood High School graduate, Rachele Kloke concluded her third varsity year as a guard/forward for the University of Idaho Vandals by earning a place on the Western Athletic Conference’s all-WAC women’s basketball second team.
That accolade came as a result of what the university’s Web site has called her “breakout season.” Full Story
First fastpitch loss after five victories
Allowing just three hits and a single walk wasn’t quite enough to emerge with a softball win last week for Brittany Jeans and her Lady Spartan fastpitch teammates (2-1 in league, 5-1 overall).
In their only league match-up of the week, the Spartans collected six hits, but Shawna Hochstetler was the only local to smack one for extra bases – in the fifth inning. Full Story
