Camano Island writer MARY E. TRIMBLE’s recently released novel “Tenderfoot,” has been selected finalist in the Best Novel of the West (long novel) category by the Western Writers of America (WWA). The Spur Awards are among the oldest and most prestigious in American literature. This is Mary’s third novel, the first two being young adult novels. The plot for “Tenderfoot” is set on a Northwest cattle ranch with a backdrop of the 1980 Mt. St. Helen eruption. The romantic suspense draws the reader into strong emotions based on family, love and the first-hand adventure of the mountain’s eruption.

KATRINA EPPERSON of Stanwood has been named to the Dean’s List in the University of Notre Dame’s College of Arts and Letters, for outstanding scholarship during Fall 2009 semester. Students who achieve Dean’s honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30 percent of students in their college.

The following students from Stanwood attending Central Washington University, have qualified for the Winter quarter 2010 honor roll. Central undergraduate students who earn a 3.5 or better grade point average, on a 4.0 scale, while carrying at least 12 graded credit hours of study are eligible for the honor roll: LAUREN ELISE PAVISH, SARAH ELAINE NAKKEN, BRYCE ROBERT MIGHELL, CALLIE MAY JOHNSTON, TYLER NICHOLAS TALLQUIST, ESQ, KELSEY LEA DINGMAN and JOHN LEIGH LENZ. BRYCE RICHARD THORSTAD of Stanwood earned a BA in law and justice (with specialization), at the end of Fall Quarter, 2009.

Washington State University’s President’s Honor Roll for the fall semester 2009 recognizes students who stand above the rest with excellent academic performance. To be eligible for the honor roll, undergraduate students must be enrolled in nine graded hours in a single term at WSU and earn a grade point average of 3.75 or earn a 3.50 cumulative GPA, based on 15 cumulative hours of graded work. Camano Island : MALOUA LOUISE BECK, ANDREW JON BRODIN, CASEY R. BURKE, SARAH MARIE CONNOR, GAGE LEE PEPIN, MAREN ELIZABETH SWANSON and DANE MICHAEL YOUNGREN.

Dr. Gary Watts, vice president for academic affairs at Jamestown College, Jamestown, N.D., announces 267 students have been named to the Dean’s List for the 2009 fall semester. Among them is CHRISTINA ORDONEZ of Stanwood. The Dean’s List includes all fulltime students who, during any given semester, earn a grade point average of 3.50 or better on a minimum of 12 semester credits. Established in 1883, Jamestown College is a private, liberal arts four-year college granting bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of science in nursing degrees. Jamestown College offers more than 40 areas of study.

MATTHEW SIMONIS of Camano Island has received a Master of Business Administration degree from Western Governors University (www.wgu. edu). The online, nonprofit university awarded over 120 graduates degrees at its semi-annual commencement ceremony held in Salt Lake City Feb. 20.. Students and graduates who were not able to attend the ceremony were able to watch the event via live video stream. The only online university in the U.S. offering competency-based degree programs, WGU is nationally accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC).
