Young golfers win two matches

The Lady Spartans’ 2010 golf season got underway last week as a number of underclassmen took on several league and non-conference opponents in a pair of matches.

In Tuesday’s round with league members Lake Stevens and Arlington, sophomore Jade Borseth paced the local effort with 14 modified Stableford points over the nine-hole Gleneagle Golf Course near Arlington.

Stableford scoring is based on 4 points for a par, 3 points for each bogey, 2 points for a double bogey, a single point for a triple bogey and 5 points for each birdie.

Madison Soth, a junior, scored 12 points in the trimeet while sophomores Kelsie Anderson (7 points), Devyn Bell (5) and Leslie Lawrence (4) followed.

Stanwood, with an accumulated 32 points from their efforts, trailed Lake Stevens (82) and Arlington (78) by day’s end.

The next day, the local linksters scored better – 46 points - despite having only four golfers available for the match with Edmonds- Woodway (117 points), Shorewood (93) and Shorecrest (54), playing at the Nile Golf and Country Club in the Shoreline area.

Once again, Jade Borseth, who sits in 20th place out of the 54 players in the Western Conference 4A North Division, led Stanwood with 14 points. Kelsey Anderson (13), Devyn Bell (12) and Madison Soth (7) also represented the Lady Sparts.

“This team is very young and inexperienced,” noted their head coach Dennis Kloke, “but with their desire to work hard and improve, I am sure the young ladies will be improving their scoring.”
