A strong showing in two of the throwing events, including a triple win by sophomore field specialist Kaci Jones, failed to propel the Lady Spartan track to a victory during a tri-meet with Oak Harbor and Cascade last Wednesday afternoon.
Jones, Emily Wayland and Kalina Eveland all finished the shot put and the discus competitions among the top four. Add Jones’ outstanding performance in the javelin – her specialty – and the Stanwood team picked up a lot of points, 75.5 overall, but it wasn’t enough to head off the determined Wildcats (88.5). The Bruins managed 24 altogether.
In the shot put, Jones finished first with a toss of 36 feet 10 inches, Wayland was close behind with 35-feet 9.5 inches (second) and Eveland put hers 30-feet 3 inches downfield (fourth).
Eveland and Wayland grabbed the third and fourth spots with their respective 77-09 and 77-07 flips of the discus while Jones won it with a 102-06 throw.
No one came close to Kaci Jones’ javelin distance: 130-07. The next best toss was 117-04 by a Cascade Bruin.
Four other Spartans won events during the meet: Daisha Kantola with an 8 feet 3 inch pole vault, Natasha Verma with an 11:40 time in the 3200 meters, Corinne Teichgrab with a 400-meter mark of 1:02 and Minna Fields with a 5:16 clocking in the 1600-meter run.
Second places went to Maddie Fritz in the pole vault (7-0), Savanna Woods in the 100-meter hurdles (17.9), Natalie Bergstrom in the 300-meter hurdles (51.4), the 4X400 relay team of Megan Wyles, Madison Davis, Bergstrom and Teichgrab (4:26), McCall Holm and Eveland with clearances of 4-04 in the high jump and Fields in the 800 (2:24).
Thirds went to Casey VanLier in the pole vault (6-06), Riley Henderson in the long jump (14-04), Jordin Stephenson in the 800 (2:31), Aisling Cuchna in the 300 hurdles (52.9), the 4X200 relay squadron of Gina Bowman, Brenda Bingham, Grace Sheridan and Jones (1:59) and Verma in the 1600 (5:29).
Earning fourth places were Kelsey Kanehen and Sheridan (hj, 4-04), Stephenson (1600, 5:36), Davis (3200, 12:33) and Bingham (300h, 53.2)
