PHOTO BY JOHN GALBREATH | STANWOOD/CAMANO NEWS The Spartan baseball nine (0-2 in league, 1-2 overall) slapped out six hits that resulted in three runs in the first inning of their game with Archbishop Murphy High School, but it took a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by centerfielder Michael Mc- Cune to put the game away, 4-3, in a nonconference encounter Saturday afternoon.

Senior outfielder Mark Pelham had a bases-clearing triple in that initial frame to give the Sparts that early lead.

The Wildcats came back with a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth inning to knot the score prior to Josh Orcutt’s platestomping as a result of Mc- Cune’s fly to the outfield.

Orcutt had a double and two runs-batted-in for the local club as well.

Connor Martin picked up the win for Stanwood while Andrew Bloom was credited with the save as a result of his two innings of relief.

In a pair of season-opening conference contests earlier in the week with Marysville Pilchuck, the Spartans fared worse as they lost 6-2 and 9-0.

The third inning saw Stanwood score its first run of the 2010 campaign. Left fielder Josh James walked, moved to second base when Orcutt received an identical pass, went to third on a fielder’s choice and then scored on Pelham’s single.

Their second, and last, run came when Orcutt walked and eventually crossed home plate after an error, a fielder’s choice and a passed ball.

Mark Pelham once again paced the Spartans with a 2- for-3 effort.

The Spartans were held to three hits and no runs in their second encounter with the Tomahawks.
