GORDON E. “ReD” HAmmONS SR.

1916-2010

Gordon E. “Red” Hammons Sr. passed on March 21, 2010.

Gordon, or “Red,” as he was known to lifelong friends, either for his Irish red hair, or for his quick fiery quips, was a man who knew the value of a hard day’s work and an honest living. He was an independent spirit who never let obstacles detract him from accomplishing his goals.

Gordon was born in Oklahoma in 1916 where he went to school and worked as a Ranch hand.

He met his young bride, Gert, in 1939 in Silver City, N.M., and married her in 1940 in Clifton, Ariz.

It was in 1943 that Gert and Gordon bought their home together in Stanwood where they raised their son Corky.

Gordon worked for the local Union 302 for more than 60 years, driving trucks and operating heavy equipment.

When not working for the union, he was busy on his homestead in Stanwood raising 30 head of cattle, tilling the fields, cutting hay or just looking for ways to harass his wife and grandkids.

There was always something to keep Gordon busy and entertained.

After Gordon and Gert retired, they spent time traveling the United States.

They eventually sold their home in Stanwood and relocated to Mesa, Ariz., where Gordon spent many days playing golf, helping others when needed, working odd jobs here and there, and going on motorcycle trips with his family and friends.

In 2004, Gordon and Gert sold their home in Arizona and moved back to Stanwood to be close to their grandchildren and greatgrand children.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Gert, his son Corky, his three grandchildren, Gordy, Lisa and Jamie, and his six great-grandchildren, Travis, Tanner and Lisa Hammons, Dominic and Maleah Agron and Leilynn Hammons.

Gordon lived a long and inspirational life. He is deeply loved and will be missed dearly. Those interested can make donations in his honor to the Freeborn Lutheran Church or to the Stanwood Food Bank.
